Mick, (in my opinion, but others will have their own views) best catch time is when there IS movement in the water, ie the 3 or 4 hours between high and low and also between low and high.
drift is dependant on both wind and tide so if they go in same direction you move fast which is not good for tackle losses or catch since you spend so little time over a given spot. However its possible even in a big tide if the wind is going the opposite way to vertually stand still even though the water is running below you. So there`s no strict answer as it depends on 4 factors wind direction and wind strength, tide direction and tide strength ........
If I could control weather etc and I had a choice I`d fish the 6 hours tide rising from low tide time (therefore flowing from north to south) on med height tide with a 5 to 8 mph southwesterly wind (wind with south to negate the drift and west to keep the sea down) Oh and with the sun shining of course (and a bottle at the ready)

    LOL with orange muppets !!

I will never forget fishing downwind from you at Luce bay. I was starving smelling the odours coming from your chefs cooking.

And theres us making do with a two day old cheese and ham sarnie.

Personally Tony I like stilton with port but I thinks it's going too far on the boat ,we'll just stick with the camambert and water biscuits .

                      dave,

that was just the frying pan with the steaks on it seasoned with some lemon peppercorns we had brought back from kenya.

you should smell it when we do a BBQ....lol

one time we were sitting up off st.abbs one day anchored for the flatties and we had a brilliant spread for the BBQ.

once the disposable BBQ was ready tony put bangers, steaks, burgers the works on and after 5 mins the smoke was like a fog all round us.

now unknown to us the BIG lifeboat was on exercise nearby and when it rounded st.abbs head we saw it change tack and head straight for us, we thought we were for it because we thought someone had called a distress for a boat on fire and 2 dudes waving their arms in the air looking for help when in reality we were trying to clear the air because we were choking on the smoke from the BBQ as it was one of those rare flat calm days.

they must have pretty good binoculars on those boats as he got to about 1/4 of a mile from us and turned away....lol

                      nice scran though )
