  • Reminiscing at this time of year

We all tend to reminisce at this time of year and Lynn and I were doing just that today, as this was the day we were supposed to be charter fishing out of Whitby to re-in act our very first charter trip in 2010. Unfortunately Lynn has been ill and off work since September and therefore we cancelled out trip weeks ago. Anyway I looked up the report on the Whitby site, as I wasn't a member on here at the time. Brought back some good memories and Lynn laughed that she has out fished me since day one! Just thought I'd post it on here.

Well I bought my girlfriend, Lynn, a surprise fishing trip to whitby for her Xmas..........................It's what she wanted. I hadn't fished much over 30 years, but early Easter this year on a beautifully sunny day and wondering what to do with our day, I suggested we have a few hours at a stocked loch I knew of. I dug out some old gear and off we went. From that day Lynn was hooked and the summer saw us fishing my old Mackerel haunts in the upper Clyde lochs. Lynn mentioned she loved boats and was there anywhere we could hire one. There wasn't on the Clyde anymore, so after some online searches I settled on a surprise trip to Whitby. I accumulated some used gear off of ebay and I thought we were ready. I had told Lynn we were going on a surprise 2 night break, nothing else. So on the 29th Dec off we set on the long haul to Whitby. The car being full of fishing gear kind of gave the game away, but she was really excited.

We arrived in Whitby after a horrendous 7hr drive in thick fog. We were surprised just how quaint and picturesque Whitby was, a really lovely Olde Worde style town(well a part of it anyway) and Checked into the B&B, then headed out and had an amazing cod and chips, plus a few oysters for Lynn at the Marine Hotel, followed by an early to bed in preparation for the trip.

The charter was a day of wreck fishing. I had no real idea what to expect and after an hour of steaming I asked a guy next to us when he thought we would reach the wreck, he said "another hour!" Bloody hell I thought, I hope Lynn doesn't get sick as there was a fair swell, but I looked over at her and she had her head in the wind beaming from ear to ear!

Being very inexperienced I have to admit our rigs and leads were way too light, we couldn't even reach the bottom and kept getting tangled with fellow anglers and the one time I did reach the bottom and hooked a fish it snapped my line! The other guys on a full boat were getting pretty tired of us when the Skipper came to our rescue with rods, reels, 80lb line and 1lb leads. So finally we were actually ready to fish!

Everyone onboard had a productive day, with many of the lads landing low double figure Cod.

The fishing was pretty hardcore, 4 hours steaming out and back and 4 hours fishing in very deep water. You got 1 drop per drift, 2 if you didn't catch on the 1st drop. However Lynn and I also had a great day with about 6 cod each from 5 tb to 9lbs. We also had the only 3 pollack to the boat all day. I was first with one of 8.5lb, but literally 30secs later, Lynn landed one of 10.3lb. Not content with that, next drop she landed a pollack of 13.5lb, well I say she landed it, actually about 2 thirds of the way up she had to hand me the rod as she was spent!

This turned out to be the heaviest fish to the boat all day, she took the sweep and with a full compliment of 12 anglers she was delighted!
Back to the B&B tired but happy and thankful to the Skipper's mate for filleting the fish for us. I think he was watching my attempts to gut and behead them and felt sorry for me. Who knew fish could be filleted with their heads still attached!?

Thanks to the Skipper and his mate on "Trot on" for their help and to the fellow anglers for their patience!

    Here's a few photos.

Well there you go, that was our our first ever charter boat report. We are lucky to have met some great people from this site and we are hoping results come back in January all clear and we can get back down soon.

A Guid New Year to all our friends on NESA, a brilliant site with great guys. So happy we found you!
