I wasn’t out myself, (recovering from my younger sisters wedding celebrations the previous day) but Davey called me to say he’d had another great day afloat.
Drifting some local ground marks they tried a number of different tactics, (daylights, spinners, shads and bait traces) to keep things interesting.
Most success was had with the 6ft flowing traces on the drift baited with the usual crab, rag, squid, mussel etc….between Davey and Marti they had 50+ Codling to 8lbs. Quite a few were Red Codling or Rockers as Davey likes to call them, (must be a Whitburn thing…!!!). He also told me that all fish were hitting the bait like steam trains and the fight on almost every fish on light gear was much greater than it was usually. The fish must have been really starving.
During the afternoon they were hit with a shower so the lads wound the gear up to mid-water and just let the boat drift whilst taking shelter in the cabin. Anyway, after sometime Marti’s rod went nuts and almost fell overboard. They managed to catch it in the nick of time with Davey asking Marti why he didn’t bring his gear off the bottom…..Marti said he did and he had a fish on and it wasn’t the bottom…a 7lb Pollock was landed after a great fight….great stuff.
Anyway, another good day had by Dave and Marti on the Volante.
