Volante Catch Report 8th August 2008
Hi All,
Went fishing yesterday…just me, the skipper, (Davey) and a pile of Hot Sausage Sandwiches to get through.
There was a bit of a breeze from the North-West and a slight swell on the water which made steaming a little “bumpy” but more than all right during any drift.
We started at Sunderland at 06:00am and headed for some local ground marks. First drop the Skipper took a Codling to 5lbs or so and continued to catch the unwanted Mackeral, (He’s good at that…..). After about an hour or so I still had nothing and he felt sorry for me so we moved off to another mark. Again, Cod fishing continued to be slow so we tried a couple more ground marks with little success.
Around 09:30hrs we moved to a winter ground mark we use quite a bit. Tactics were changed to try and keep things interesting, (and even more sporting)... Using 6lb class rods we were fishing with shads, jelly’s etc….and all came to life. Was it the change in venue or tactics….we didn’t know? One thing we did see that I haven’t seen in our waters is Pollock chasing lures right up to the surface. I have only seen this on the West Coast when fishing with Ian Burrett. Skipper Davey was bringing his jelly back to the boat. With 15ft traces you needed to get your lead etc…in the boat then hand retrieve the lure. As Davey was doing this I saw a Pollock swim around the lure and it looked ready to pounce when Dave got it out of the water, (he didn’t see the fish and still thinks I was on drugs or something). As soon as this happened it dived back down, obviously startled.
As the tide slowed down we moved to some wrecks that we haven’t fished in quite some years. Again we did quite well……a first for the wrecks in 2007. We continued to catch Cod to around 7lbs, all fishing like hell on our light gear.
We eventually ran out of booms so I switched to Ling tactics and caught a couple of small ling which was great on a 6lb class outfit at 26 fathoms.
Anyway through the day we ended up with around 20+ Cod to 7lbs, Ling, Pollock, Coalie, Whiting & Mackeral between two of us. All in all a good day…..though a little uncomfortable at times when steaming against the swell.
Next trip out is probably 31st August with Ian Burrett so I have a while to wait. I haven’t done this little boat fishing in the summer for quite some time.
