Just got back from the rnli auction trip to Lochaline with Graham and Stephen and we had an excellent time to say the least. It puts presure on to try and ensure that two people catch that fish of a lifetime as a lot can go wrong.
We left at 7am friday morning in glorious sunshine and a good foercast for the weekend. The journey is a long one and Stephen was worrying all the way because he had forgotten to bring his passport Just as we crossed the border at Gretna it started to rain, which was to be the order of things for the whole weekend. Fortunately there was no wind to speak of so things were looking good.
We arrived in Lochaline at about 2pm, checked into the hotel, loaded up the boat, set up tackle and launched the boat. This put us heading out on a glass like sea at about 35 knots to get some bait from round the corner. The mackrel were very obliging and we soon had enough to see us through the evening. It was then back round towards the slipway to a mark about 1/2 mile from the launch point. The anchor went down into 380 ft of water and we were soon lying nicely with the tide.
Over went the three rods each baited with a whole mackrel and an additional flapper on a size 0/8. With the boat laying perfectly in the tide we sat back to wait. Stephen set up a bait rod and dropped over the side to find he could see his backing. This rod produced a few small doggies but you soon get fed up of winding in a rod from 350 ft.
We had decided to take it in turns to land fish regardless of which rod they were caught on as this seemed like a good plan to ensure everyone got one. As the tide slackened off a ratchet clicked indicating some interest. I picked up the rod while stephen donned the butt pad and harness. Set the drag and wound into the fish. The time was 8.50pm. The rod was handed over to stephen and he was into his first skate. There are those who say they dont fight well...I can only assume this is people who have never caught one on braid. You battle for 20 minutes to get 50ft of line on the reel and then the skate turns and heads back to the bottom in an unstoppable run and takes it all back. As the hour came up stephen was showing signs of fatigue and the skate was finally heading up. Graham and I had wound up the other two rods, cleared the deck and prepared everything for when the fish came aboard. Which it did after about 100 mins. Measured, photo and tagged then returned as fast as possible it weighed 168 lb...not bad for a first fish.
The light was fading so we pulled up the anchor and headed to the bar for a few beers to celebrate and listen to stephen phoning everyone in his telephone directory to tell them. Mission one accomplished
Next day we were up for breakfast at 8 and heading out to a mark recommended on the Firth of Lorne before 9. I had never fished the firth before but with the sea like glass it seemed like an ideal time to give it a try. There was a lot of mist and a light drizzle. A quick call for mackrel and the mark was entered into the gps. 11.9 miles to travel, but with the flat sea we were at the mark in around 25 minutes. As we approached the mark I slowed down to accurately position us and happened to look back and saw what looked like a rock about 200 yards behind us. As we had just travelled over the rock this seemed unusual to say the least. I pointed it out to the others and as I mentioned it the rock slide beneath the surface!! Since we had not dropped anchor we went back to take a look and were treated to an unforgettable twenty minutes following a basking shark about 25 ft long!!!

(hope that works) Sorry I cant put up pictures but will leave that to stephen and graham.
So back to the mark, dropped anchor and out went the rods. This time we were fishing 490 ft ...a new experience for me. The tide was almost at a stand still and with no wind watsoever we took a while to settle to anchor. Over went the rods and settle back. The all too rare sun was making an appearance and burning off the mist and things were looking good. At 9.50 my rod went again and it was my turn. Harness and but pad on (over the top of my coat which turned out to be a mistake) and battle commenced. Now I haven't had that many skate, but have seen quite a lot caught and have never had one fight like that one did. At one stage it took line from my reel for a good two minutes without stopping! I had had the fish on for about 1/2 hour when another rod slammed over and it was grahams turn. The problem was we only had one butt pad and harness so Graham was going to have to work hard. As my fish came towards the top the tide stopped and the boat was wallowing around. The pulling of the fish was gradually turning the boat a full 360 deg back across the anchor rope. Fortunately Stepehn was able to bring the rope from the front and we passed the rod under the rope and the fish was landed. The sun by this time had made a rare appearance and playing a skate in glorious sunshine with a floatation jacket on is no fun. Stephen and I landed my fish which weighed 163 lb and graham was given the pad and harness. His fish then fell off which was unfortunate but it happens.
The tide picked up and the rods went back in. At 1.30 Graham hit into a fish. Whilst he was playing it Stephen hit one on grahams new rod at 1.50pm. Graham landed his fish and set a new PB with a fish of 154 lb. This left Stephen playing a fish on a 30-50 beastmaster. Now despite the name on the rod it just wasn't applying enough pressure and it took stephen 2 hrs and 59 mins to land that fish. During which time he took some real stick about being weak. That fish weighed in at 171lb.
Things were going well..evryone had caught so for me it was mission accomplished. The tide had turned again and started to flood at a very fast rate. The 1kg weights were failing to hold bottom, but as we had all caught and had a long travel back we up anchored and headed back for a meal at the hotel and a few well earned beers (again)
The Sunday saw us up early for breakfast and I sat on the step of the hotel and watched an otter fishing in a flat calm sea about 100 yards off the hotel front. The weather had now turned and there was a persistant drizzle which was to last all day. There was little arguement to as to where we were going to fish after the previous day...the same mark. the slight problem was that I did not have enough petrol to do the trip and back...and the petrol station did not open untill 11.30 am.
So we launched the boat, took off the skate gear and put the spinning rods onboard and drifted down the channel with spinners for pollock. We had several but they were very small. the largest was caught by Graham and would be about 2 1/2lb. After an hour of this we went round the corner and had a go for cuckoo wrasse. Stepehn caught one but it was a female which are comparatively drab compared to the males.
With the rain pouring down it was back to the cafe for a sarnie and load up the skate gear. Fill up the tanks and round the corner for mackrel. These proved hard to come by (as always when your in a rush to catch a tide change) but eventually we had plenty even if they were a bit small. It was flat out to the firth of lorne.
We anchored up about 200 yards away from our spot the day before and the depth was slightly less at 440 ft. Over went the rods and I turned round to sit down. As I sat my rod screamed off..must have been in all of 1 minute. This fish fought for every inch of line unlike the previous one that took off in screaming runs.
While I was playing it this happened-TURN ON YOUR SOUND.
cem-services.co.uk/cem_html/hobbies/double_take.avi
This fish was our only recapture of a tagged fish of the weekend and weighed a healthy 179 lb. A new personal best. Grahams fish was the only male caught that weekend and weighed 126 lb. Stephen hooked another fish followed shortly by me. I landed mine first which we all agreed was the largest fish of the weekend but we were unable to pull it aboard due to exhaustion so it was released without tagging at the side to prevent doing it any harm we put it as a 180 lb fish as it was larger than any other caught. Stephens fish was measured at the side and tagged as we could not lift that either . That one went 173 lb.
Stepehen and Graham will post some more pics as I cant on here. But if I got them all it should be fish of
Graham 126 and 154
Stephen 171,173 and 168
Me 180?,179 and 163
That should be 8 fish for a total of 1314 lb.
Great guys to fish with and fun company in the bar. Shame Stephen is so carp at pool.
Dave
PS you know that feeling when you think you have forgotten something but cant remeber what? Well I just realised I forgot to bring the boat home. Going to have to go back and get it in two weeks time

I aint gonna comment on the auction bit until the problems last night are read by me and sorted. I am not actually sure if I broke the law ...but frankly after this weekends fishing I dont give a dam!
I was well peed off to hear a comment that one of stephens mates reckoned he had been "!ripped off". I hope that guy reads this and eats his words!
I think IF there is another auction we may be looking at some kind of reserve...and I know two guys who will be well in on the bidding!

Hi Dave
Sounds like you had a cracking trip. I am glad the GPS numbers I gave you worked out well. The tide does run on that mark, midway through the flood, we usually move to the other set of numbers at this time as the tide is less strong.
Did you try for the Blackmouths?

Alan, sorry I havn't uploaded with photobucket but I'll mail u the pics
I cant comment on the debate that was removed from the board cos I havn't read it but I can say that the only expenses I incurred apart from my enormous beer bill was £51 for B&B. Dave even treat myself and Stephen to dinner on the Saturday night, thanks Dave

Hi ian.
Thanks for the gps numbers....the first one really came up trumps. To be perfectly honest we could not have boated any more fish if we had moved to an alternate mark. The last two we got we could not lift into the boat!!!
The most unusual thing happened on the sunday in that we were anchored in 480 ft with no sign of any tide at the back of the boat and yet 1kg leads were ripped away with the undertow! Water at those depths does some strange things.
The mark we fished was given to me by Ian and I have to say I am forever gratefull for giving us the best weekends fishing you could believe. I would also like to mention that Ian does run an annual skate trip every year lasting a bit longer than ours...and yes he is an official charter skipper. If you fancy a try at this get in touch with him ...I really dont think you would regret it! No ...I aint a relative ...just the options for charters are limited in that area.
Thanks Ian
Dave

Hi Dave
Sounds like you had a cracking trip. I am glad the GPS numbers I gave you worked out well. The tide does run on that mark, midway through the flood, we usually move to the other set of numbers at this time as the tide is less strong.
Did you try for the Blackmouths?

Great days

Thanks Ian
Dave
