Good Friday 5:45am........van broke down on the A69 and escorted home by the AA. Thought we may have to abort but managed to hire a van and arrived at Lochaline around 7:00pm.
Saturday......three fished off Dave's boat with heavy rods baited with whole mackerel for skate and lighter rods for other species and we picked up a few doggies which I enjoyed at the time because I'd never caught one before.........but now I understand why most anglers hate them. We headed back in around 2:00pm for a bite to eat after visting "Catchlalot" where one angler on board was into a skate (on 30lb tackle) which straightened his hook after a two and a quarter hour fight.
Catchalot
We came back out and fished over slack water and picked up more doggies on the lighter tackle. Around 7pm Dave hooked into a skate and kindly handed me the rod. I soon understood the attraction and the effort put in to this kind of angling when I realized that a 16 stone bricky was on the other end of a fish and I wasn't having it all my own way. All I could do was follow Dave's instructions and after half and hour I had the fish off the bottem and was gaining line nicely when it slipped the hook.
Sunday......the loch was boiling but we gave it a go anyway but after a few very uncomfortable hours we headed for calmer waters and fished for thornback rays but had doggies raiding the baits......."chavs of the sea"! I eventually got a small thornback but was happy cos another species was added to my list. We headed for shore around 5pm. The loch was calming down and we were kindly invited to fish the slack water period at high tide (8pm ish) with Davy Holt aboard "Catchalot". Five baits went down to around 400 feet deep and around 8:30 I had a bite. I was fitted into a harness and handed a rod with a 145lb skate on the other end which was boated about 45 mins later.
With three new species including a personal best, Easter 2006 will not be forgotten. I had a top time, made new friends and enjoyed the breathtaking scenery and local hospitality. Sincere thanks to davem and everyone else who made it possible

Well done graham, and a great report.
We were really up against it as regards the weather, with anchoring up being the main problem. Many thanks must go to Davy for the invite out on Sunday evening as I really did not fancy trying to anchor up again in that swell. I usually use a 2kg anchor off hartlepool and had bought a 5kg one to be prepared. Ended up borrowing a 12kg plough off the skipper of onyermarks. Thanks Ian and for the hospitality shown.
It was frustrating when that first fish came off after half an hour, you would think that when they had been on that long you have them well hooked. When we reeled in the bait was still on and the hook was embedded in the mackrel skull and I think that is why it didnt get a good hold. Still it was nice to see a fish on my christmas pressie at last, same blank as John's rod but not the gay version
For my catch report ...I caught nothing...but as always up there I enjoyed every minute and hope to be back in a few weeks time.
Thanks for the help Davy and Ian, and well done Graham
Dave

Was a good weekend, but many of the minor tradgedies seem to have been glossed over. You know the ones I mean...stuff that makes the weekend just that little bit more of a challenge...like filling up the petrol tank at the garage and realising as you replace the nozzle that you now have a tank containing diesel .
Graham needed three vehicles to get there was a difficult start, I got a cracked windscreen on the way up, it all adds to the fun or not depending on your opinion.
The weather was attrocious for the time of year, gales howling down the lock and regular hail storms all making for uncomfortable fishing. Fortunately most of the places you fish are quite narrow and the sea calms down as fast as it gets up. It can and did go from flat calm to a 4 ft swell and back to flat calm in the space of an hour.
great fishing and great company...what more can you ask for.
Dave

Was actually 20lb tackle, on which Davy has landed fish over 180lb before. All on board were of the opinion that the one Paul lost at the weekend was a biggie!
And less jokes about 'gay' pink reels, ok!
