Fished last Wednesday and it was pretty poor, Sunday was a different experience. By 07:30 we were fishing the North side of Alnmouth on a beautiful flat sea and no wind. The majority of the Amble anglers seemed to have elected to go South. The Cod kept coming to the boat regularly and while the size had increased from the previous days many were of the should I keep it or sling it back variety but among them were many good eating size. The Upholder was trying closer inshore I don't know what success they were having and they eventually moved off further North.
Sometime after low water the fishing slowed dramatically with the odd fish being caught every 15 mins or so. I've noted recently, very unscientifically, that slack water off Alnmouth doesn't seem to correspond with the published times. Later a breeze picked up and the sky cleared and the fishing picked up again. As usual I was using the 'Morrison prawn' to devastating effect but also several fish were going for the unbaited top and middle muppets on the my 3 hook trace. My mate was using some garish hokias and I was seriously outfishing him untill he saw the light and also changed to muppets.
We fished until we ran out of prawns. The final total was 80 cod between the two of us, we kept about 25. I guess the bigger fish will appear soon, the young uns always run ahead of old uns. It was one of those rare days when it was great to be out at sea.
Does anyone chill their fish before filleting? They are definitely easier to fillet when really cold ?
