Whilst I agree that trawlers take too many fish from our seas, I think this debate is about the lack of fish this week rather than in general, they were there last week and now they are gone, no doubt to return again next week or the week after , the question is, why? And where do they go?

O.k then, here is my sensible answer

At this time of year the cod are mainly feeding on sprat and sandeel. When the sea roughs up the water colours and the baitfish become hard to find. Maybie the cod just cant be bothered to spend energy looking for food, hence...... not feeding.

As good a theory as any I reckon , I just wish the sea would stay flat long enough to go look for the blighters more often

Aye Richy , I'm beginning to think the north east coast of England is the wrong place to keep a fishing boat , or even a pleasure boat, there were a few couples sitting in the sunshine on their boats in the marina over the bank holiday, I'm not one for doing that, I bought a boat to fish from, if I can't use it due to the weather or there aren't any fish when I can use it , there's not a lot of point in having it . I'm sitting looking at grey skies and the trees are blowing about, and it's June in a couple of days..................maybe I should swap the boat for a Porsche

We know things are bad at the moment, and the mention of how many boats will be up for sale if things don't improve soon, but next season could be a boom one for fish, then there would be a frenzy of activity to buy another boat. Patience is called for, as I'm sure things will improve very soon, I can feel it in my braid

You are the same as me, my boat is a tool, something to fish from, get me to the marks and nothing more....the whole owning a boat thing, pottering about means nowt to me...if i cant fish from it whats the point but all that said i still think this season will be fine. The only concern is the long range "experts" say we are in for a very very windy sunny due to the jet streams out of sync but time will tell as they cant get it right 48hrs ahead.

Mackerel will be here this comming weekend am 90% sure

2012 was the rainiest year on record !! All three major rivers flooded and transported tons of agricultural mud and with it fertiliser into the sea. On top the costal fields were also flooded and drained its mud and fertiliser into the Tyne/Wear/Tees etc estuaries.

As a consequence we got the heaviest algae blossom, which I believe is not even fully over. The sea still has a green stain to it. However, after the blossom, the algae die and fall down to the sea bed and cover it yet again.

The big seas continue to stir up this unpleasant mixture of mud, fertiliser, algae and dead algae.

Now I am not a biologist to assess how all that effect the angling...

Is it only spoiling the visibility? In that case uptiding should work
Is it poisenous or too sour (pH?)
Does it deter the bait fish? Or the bait fish food is dead (worms etc)

I think we all hope that the tides and big seas not only stir it up, but eventually clear it away. What are some 3 small river compared to the North Sea.
