I am sure the subject of "why no fish" has been discussed on many a pontoon and boat.

The "philosophers" have hoyed many a theory backed up with circumstantial ideas and have gone into great depth on convincing one another on why, what, where and who,s fault it is.
As a highlight on some of the main titles of discussions and near blows with people getting barred off boats and refusing to make cuppas coz they have a lip on.....so

Ya bought the wrong colours.....Thai fault we cort nowt..how's that ? thee colourblind anyhow..
Ya went the wrong way........his fault we caught nowt...thou said gan left
He was drivin.......his fault we caught nowt....sh!te
We didn't,t gan far enough owt....his fault....thou hoyed up so a couldn't

With a few more intellectual theories hoyed in that some divint na or understand about....
Too much krill and sandeel getting wiped out for cat food and nowt for the cod to eat..."I give our budgy krill, ....that's fcukin stoppin...!" .....Brilliant that one...
Ozone.......sick of that one...that's just a tax thing IMO
Very cold and late winter.....water temp down for this time of year
Exceptional lot of fresh water from the rain, with fertiliser and mud...
Over fishing from those foreign fcukers
Too many offshore high winds, not giving the water a chance to settle and clear
Kull those fckin seals, they eat their body weight every day and there,s some fatuns about.


Considering the amounts of boats, anglers and number of marks fished yesterday out of Hartlepool, with only ones and two fish getting reported this subject is a daily subject.

Over the last 7 to 10 days, things looked like the fish were starting to show with scattered reports then that big blow has just blew it away with what seems a unbelievable return of fish for all anglers out of the Pool and the other NE ports I suspect.

So does any of the other forum members have any philosophy on why so dismal, or is it just the phyllosippers of the Pool who are trying to get the heads around it, or the debating table will continue.

Kettles on ....just waiting for parliament to start very shortly.........

IMO i think the poor little things feel not wanted and under fished...so they have decided to go somewhere else to be caught.. probably the med as they don't have a lot of fish and its a bit warmer anyway...

our lass rekons greek fishermen are rather good looking, probably much better than us lot, so you can't blame the fish for wanting to be caught off one of them and served up in a nice greek salad, much better than dipped in batter and deep fat fried..

its disturbing to hear about the krill tho.

i like seals, they can do better ball tricks than that beckham bloke, and them dolphins make that flipper noise "mimimimimimim" oh theres a boy in trouble in his dingy...mimimimimimimi and maccy where ?

Well Paul, I think you've hit the nail on the head with some of your observations, like the sprats and eels being slaughtered for everything. lots of animals and insects only breed intensively if there is enough food in the chain to bring offspring up. The sea temperature can effect locations of shoals of fish by just half a degree, and so on and on, but I do think, to the detroment of budgerigars, we should not be feeding them krill.

Surely lots of fat seals points to lots of available fish? Mind you, I was down the skeers yesterday, barely seen any life at all other than boats full of anglers , coming back in through the south channel the place was teeming with terns an puffins catching sprats, I probably motored 6 miles or so too far ? They weren't there on my way out though
I've no idea where the fish have gone, but I'm sure they are still available , the fat seals prove that , and he fact that we caught and returned loads last time out , they can't have all been turned into budgie food in two weeks.
Either they are still there and not feeding , or they do a shoot for a while when the water is not to their liking , I think it might be a bit if both , those big enough to make the move do, those that aren't stay put and lie low.
Whatever the reasons,I'm sure they'll be back , or like a neighbouring berth holder said yesterday " there'll be a lot of boats up for sale if they're not"

The fat seal theory was debated, same point of views given, that if they,re fat there must be fish...........ah BUT .....should they be fatter than they are....!!!

I was getting fish last week and one was on the wreck, he was comin up just in front of the boat eatin fish like a corn on the cob...tormentin us, steve reackoned he must be using rhubarb and custards...!!!

Not a seal in sight yesterday which is very unusual

Latest off the press with the parliamentary session before the tea break,

still unsettled with loads of sh!te on the seabed, the fish don,t like it in the gills so they have gone offshore....!!?.."what about in winter when the rougher the better for catching cod".....they,re still arguing now, with refusal of biscuits and only one sugar in his tea, tea has floaters in as well.......

You just missed the seal yesterday Paul, about half two we pulled up to a wreck just as you were coming away and 2 mins later a seal poped up , it was a canny way out aswell

It had a sack full of double figure cod, reckoned it was plucking them off just as they were about to snaffle someone's rhubarb and custard shad

We put some miles in yesterday, water didn't start getting clearish till 20 odd mile out.

Seen some dodgy looking bloke on a boat called Volante he even managed a cod while we shared a wreck.

I ended the day with one tommy codling to my name

it's the worst season in 5.7 years of living memory...I remember when we could catch 3.6 cod per man per 2.3 minutes per trip and that was before the days of the Gulf stream moving and the algae bloom encouraging the seals and dolphins to mate and eat all the cod

In fact it's Hugh Fearnley Eatitalls fault...he's just been blindsided by a Peterborough trawler skipper (and a wedge of cash in a brown envelope from the local fisheries I'll wager) into believing that the North Sea is harry brimmers with cod again. After a couple of book deals and a TV series all is well again and he goes back to eating vegetarian mung soya for a year or summink similar

In fact there is only one person to blame in all this...

I think that would result in a weird kinda mammal like... and a very good fish eater

bet it would still be good balencing a ball on its beak too...

At the moment IMO it is because....

1/ Less fish now then there ever has been

2/ Change in the worlds weather resulting in currents and air streams changing

3/ Because of the above the seasons are out of Sync

4/ The sea is colder than it should be at this time of year because of the above

5/ NE sea's and rain from the land the last 2 seasons has effected the inshore waters


Ponits 2,4 and 5 or FACTS

West coast the same, the sea is only 9.8c and should be 11.5c as has been since records began (fact)

If you were to cull all of the humans on trawlers instead of seals I bet the fish would soon return.
