how do i stop my boat swinging round on the anchor ? it causes me problems when i\'m uptiding or anchoring over a wreck i\'ve thought of using 2 anchors 1 over the stern and 1 over the bow but i think this might be a bit dodgy if there\'s a bit of a swell or maybe tying an old car battery or breezblock onto some rope and hanging it off the back of the boat any sugestions ?

no keithb i usualy keep an eye on the tracklog on my plotter and the usual pattern is like a swinging pendelum if you know what i mean and it swings from an axis point where the anchor is my boat is only about 16 foot and fairly light so the wind affects it quite a lot does anyone else have this problem ? and if so how do you stop it ?Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street with a bald head and a beer gut, and still think they are sexy.Comment

how much chain and how long is the line to the anchor?? In my yottie days(!) you would sometimes find the boat would swing, but largely depended on how much line you had out, if it was too short it would swing.
15 metres of chain and depending on the wind, anything up to 5 times the depth of the water in rope to the chain, sometimes more if it were a tad breezy...
the other rule we used to work on was 1lb of anchor wieght for each foot of boat length, to stop dragging
if you still are swinging, try a sea anchor/drogue into the current, far safer and easier than faffing with 2 anchors in open water

I normaly let out 3 times more line than the depth, so if the water is 25 foot, i will let out about 75 foot of anchor rope.
Most of the time i use a 6 kg folding anchor, and 16 foot of chain, i dont know exactly how much the chain weighs but i know its considerably more than the anchor.
A sea anchor/drogue sounds like a good idea, it would probably solve the problem when i\'m uptiding but it might get in the way if i\'m anchored just uptide of a wreck downtiding a line back into it.

its just a big folding sack/min parachute type thing, so folds up to not much room at all when not in use.
if you can get hold of a couple of small trawl net floats, thread the line to the drougue through these, that will keep the line to the drogue on the surface, so hopefully keep it out of the way of lines if fishing of the backʎɐqǝ uo pɹɐoqʎǝʞ ɐ ʎnq ı ǝɯıʇ ʇsɐן ǝɥʇ sı sıɥʇ.
