  • Boat reel for braid

I'm looking to upgrade my boat reel so was wondering what you boat lads use. I'm looking to load it with 50lb braid is this enough and do you use a level wind with braid. Thanks Alan

The lads on hear mostly use 50lb-60lb braid and work great with a level wind reel, saves the wear on your thumb. I personally use a fixed spool nowadays and light rod 12lb class.

In my opinion you don't need a level wind on a boat reel, you are only dropping your line straight down most of the time so why worry about it being level, I certainly don't worry about it when reeling a fish in. Just another thing to go wrong.
              Cheers, Keith.

I changed from penn's and okuma sol terra's to a Fin Nor Maquessa without a level wind last year. The Fin Nor is a beast of a reel and a different class to the other two. I have asked the misses for another Fin Nor for my birthday, fantastic reels with a great retrieve, most reels with level winds have a slow retrieve I have found.

Abu 7000 , it comes with level wind, I've only been caught in it once , I now use avet and snowbee without level wind , the abus are great reels , I've never had any problems with them , but I'm with the other lads on the level wind since I got my finger caught in it, jees it hurts, and you can't unwind it back out either , it's a case of grinning and pulling till something gives
You can take it of the abu if you want of course.
