Been down to Royal Quays this morning for the usual start up and check ....

What a mess !!! seagull crup everywhere, ended up a full wash and polish (and I'd not alerted the crew so had to do it all myself )

But, could this be a sign for the coming season, does the fact that there are twice as many gulls around as usual (and they have been gorging on mussel) does it mean theres lots of food around or at least the signs that we mere mortals cannot read are telling the gulls there'll be lots of food soon ....... lets hope so .....

good to see a few boats getting out to test the way, hope you had a good day Kev

They've probably been gorging on left over Mc Donalds and fish n chips Norm so it could be that there are more and more take aways opening up

i had a "boat keeper" but he's shifted to seaham now....

i'll really have to start prepping soon....

Oooh! I was so, so tempted to have a run out today , but did a couple of jobs around the house instead .
I seen snowdrops flowering in the garden yesterday , the daffodils are about 6 " high , the sun has been out all day today and is much higher in the sky now , it's definitely getting near fishing time.
Whether the signs point to a good year or not I have no idea , I'll be happy with a repeat of last years fishing with better weather to go with it, any improvement in the fishing will be a bonus, but I think I'll wait a long time before I get another day like I had on the spring run last year.
Forecast says it's going to get really cold again later this week, I think I'll give it till after that cold snap then I'm looking for light winds to get out there

Yes Duncan, It's a strange hobby fishing, I remember finding a loch in Scotland many years ago that had been stocked with coarse fish , I spent a day there , it took me till after lunch moving around trying different spots and methods and baits to find the fish , I found them, carp, in about 25 ft of water just under my 12 ft rod tip, I had to put a sliding float on to get down to them and got them feeding on sweet corn , they averaged 6lb or so each , by tea time I had a keep net full of them, it was unbelievable fishing , but it eventually turned into just plain hard work.
I think I enjoyed that day so much more for the time I had to spend searching for them than actually catching them. The same applies to the cod off amble , I've had some big bags , but it can become just plain hard work once you find the fish and the method if there are a lot of fish there.
Fortunately there are plenty hard days to make the good ones exciting and memorable , and I'm ready and raring to go again hunting them out

ha ha im in history mode now

Many years ago i sailed east 24 miles with one of the best and a crew of about 8 invited lads in a plodder that would barely touch 8knots

time behind the wheel probs a good 3 and half hours

time on the mat praying the bugger would keep going,about the same

wind and tide were right fished 7 wrecks and not a fish,and i mean not a fish

well naffed off we headed back,despondent to say the least.

a stop at some wrecks 12 mile from home produced cod mayhem to say the least and change what was now becoming a long day

when i asked why we didnt stop there on the way out

just get on with washing the @@@@@@g boat was the answer

of all the miles we travel in search of cod (sometimes we get lucky and sometimes we dont) we usually have our most memorable catches close to home ...... usually on the way back from a long voyage ...
and sometimes we just use the banker ............. St Marys
