Anyone know if my Silva15 DSC radio ( Which is wired in to a GPS ) should show the gps position automatically or do I need my mmsi number entered first . At the moment it\'s showing no GPS position
Everything was fitted when I got her , I just have one specific problem with the input from the plotter to the radio . When the distress button is activated it sends an automatic mayday showing your exact position to the coastghuard ( Or anyone else for that matter ) . It just does not want to play at the moment
Hi Dave, not sure but I would expect position to be continually updated and displayed, I`ll have a word with Barrie next to slinky kate he`s just fitted a DSC along with a new furuno Plotter and its all up and running fine.
When are you expecting to be up here Dave? weather supposed to be easing as next week goes on.
Looking at next thursday onwards , weather permitting . I\'ll post nearer the time .
Made up a boatload of pirks of all colours , leadheads , booms it runs in to hundreds . Reckon it will be bait this time of year , looking at St: mary\'s or down south inshore .
Will be keeping close in Richy in case it changes , but if it\'s japs face you never know . Need a run out in the harbour first just to check everything works ( Anchor , instruments , etc ) before we start any epic journies :P :P :P
Has anybody heard of a digital distress being sent , and what the response times were . I understand you can call up on the mmsi number call system also for general traffic ?
dave
i have a full dsc (gmdss) short/long and satellite ticket. Yes have seen the distress sent - response is where you are in the coastal areas (areas 1) you would normally get an instantanious reply from a coastal station as most modern systems would send it over vhf as well as satellite. Yes you can set it up to receive weather warnings and navigation warnings via the system automatically. I would be interested to have a look at your system when you get up here - just to see how different it is to the navy system(not a lot i believe as system is civilian).
Regards
Jason
give a man a fish and feed him for a day - teach the man to fish and feed him for life!!!!
Thanks for that . I have the short range / dsc certificate and everything is easier sat in a classroom LOL .
It is a bit ott on the face of it , but there have been isolated cases I\'ve heard of where a \"Normal\" mayday could not be sent ( ie being ran over by a ferry in the fog ) . Better to have it than not like I think .
It\'s wired up to my chartplotter now and shows my position ready to send in an emergency .
If I want to receive weather warnings , I understand it requires to be wired up to a Navtex receiver . Is that correct ?
yes mate it does. the set i used to use received into the set also and had a little screen that you could look at the general calls received. Your right though it is a bit ott but as you say safety comes first. Bet you can not wait still until the weather turns for the best.
The navtex is a good bit of kit and very easy to set up for the areas you require.

Norman has been trying to get me to log on to this board for a while so thought I would have a quick look and I noticed you message about DSC. Pleased you got sorted with it. I think you can make a list of contacts on the DSC radio\'s for sending text messages. Whats your MMSI number and I will give it a try. Might be good to have some contacts in for when the season starts.
By the way I have Malibu next to Norman in the marina.
Some good chat on here and some very nice people , made some good friends from here . Someone will always help with any problems and nothing is too much trouble
I\'ll catch you next time at R/Q for a look at \"Malibu\" , she really looks good . As we have said before , it\'s been along winter though roll on the season . Don\'t know if Norman mentioned it to you but we are planning some big trips (Graveyard for one :P ) , can\'t wait .
