  • Float switch

    Hello all,
I noticed that you can buy float switches to connect to the bilge pumps available for boats, so I\'m thinking of fitting a one.

Not sure of the make of my pump but its the 360 model and I\'m sure its the same make as the float switches that are advertised. My pump is only connected to the battery when needed and put into the sump area at the back of the boat and the hose placed over the back by the outboard while its pumping the water out. (hope this makes sense)

Anyway, I was going to fix the pump permanently into the corner of the sump area and connect the float switch to it and then the float switch direct to the battery with an inline fuse between. Also fixing the float switch so it trips when the water level reaches the top of the sump area.

Just wondering if this is the right way to do it or not and if you lot may have any pointers for me to watch out for.

    Cheers
    Martin

No problems with tha Codfather, float switches come standard like that with wiring diagrams, you`ll also need a console switch which will allow you to switch between ON / OFF / AUTO (all in one rocker switch). the auto setting uses the floats built in buffer so it doesnt switch off and on in quick succession (ie it will make at a set level but then will break a set level below , so allowing pump to dispose of liquid). Some are physical buffers worked on levels , and some are electronic timers.
Usually the ON part of the switch is spring loaded so you cannot switch it on and forget about it.
Try Storrar Marine on Coast Road, they keep a good selection

Might be worth thinking about the battery drain if you\'re going to leave it on it\'s own for a while. I found a 2 Watt solar panel for £25 at a caravan shop which I\'ve wired in to keep the battery topped up.

        Cheers lads,
I have a decent sized spare battery that I was going to use just for the bilge pump and just keep charging it up. I imagine the pump will get some use over the winter months .

Phil, at that price I might invest in a one of those solar pannels for the main battery, I thought they were a lot more expensive

The cover for the boat is held on by prestuds but they don\'t seem to last long and are about all knackered now.
Is their any better ways of fastening the boat cover on ?
