Found this on the net, last letter of you serial number denotes the year...
The last letter corresponds to the year listed in the chart below.
    1984(N) 1985(K) 1986(J) 1987(H) 1988(G) 1989(F)
    1990(D) 1991(P) 1992(Q) 1993(R) 1994(S) 1995(T)
    1996(U) 1997(V) 1998(W) 1999(X) 2000(Y) 2001(Z)

    Hope it helps.....

Can you tell what the exhaust gaskets are made out of, you could possibly make a set...
This might be a long shot....the serial numbers are usually stamped onto the plate, try taking the plate off and the imprint may have transfered to the back of the plate, depends how thin the plate is though....

mmm ill try that.... gasket looks like papper but engine has not long had a lot of new parts fitted inc head and it looks like he has re-used the exhaust gaskets and just put silicon on them to help seal... id rather get new gaskets and re do everything propperly as the engine is a realy good runner snd fires up first press even though its old...and there is less chance of a gasket failing on me when im out...
