  • pleased the weekends over

Well i am pleased to say i am now back home and recapping the last few days in the boat.
On friday we decided to take the boat down to hartlepool for a few days, from there it all went downhill quickly, sea conditions where ok, however approx 5 miles out from seaham there was a horrible sound from the engine compartment and all drive was lost, a quick inspection followed and i thought the gearbox was knackered.
I had no choice but to call Humber Coastgaurd and get the lifeboat out to tow me to Hartlepool marina, upon arrivall there must have been 100 people watching me get towed into the lock, further checks to the gearbox showed the hydrualic block to come loose and spray 3 litres of fluid all over compartment, then had to get my dad to come down with some tools...anyway we got it fixed.
Seen the weather forecast this morning and thought it would not be to bad, so we set off from Hartlepool about 10 am, however the sea kept building and some of the waves were huge on the way back especially around souter point, never in my life been so pleased to be coming into the tyne in my life, it was horrendous and if i had not have been concentrating so hard i would have been ****ting myself, had i have thought the sea would have been building all the time i would never have set off, i would reckon that some of the waves peaks to troughs were 20 to 30 foot, it took over 4 hours at 6 / 8 knots....i will sleep well tonight.
When i think back to the conditions Norman and me came back in from amble a few years ago, i thought that was bad, this was much worse, i never have or ever want to experience it again.

Just pleased your safe and back home Bob, It\'s no fun being stuck out there with the sea lifting all the time is it.

I dont know the feeling about being towed back and having hundreds of people turn out to watch you though. God, What must that be like

good to hear everthing turned out OK though.

Thanks lads so am i, when you get home and recap on the possible dangers its a very worrying thought, fortunatley i have a boat capable of probally taking worse conditions than that, however i never want to find out.
At least Kate was ill lying on the floor being sick so she never really looked out of the window to she the waves, also had the gearbox have failed like it did on the way there, i would have had to send out a mayday because it was then a life threatening situation.

Just pleased to hear you both got back safely. Tried to fish Shields pier last night, not a chance, too wild and windy.
As I have grown older, I've learned that pleasing everyone is impossible,
but P*****g everyone off is a piece of cake.

There\'s always a crowd at Hartlepool lock anyway - I always feel under pressure not to make a cock up in there, so I sympathise with your embarrassment.

Was that you in the Merryfisher moored up when we left the marina on Saturday (Sasha?). Would have given you a call if I\'d known.

Have to agree with you - loss of drive in those conditions certainly would be a Mayday. Anchoring would have been a challenge, esp. with no fit crew.

We didn\'t go out Sunday \'cos I thought the wind looked a bit dodgy with a northerly forecast - how glad I am that we stayed at home.

              Glad you made it safely.
