  • Chartplotters

I intend to buy a chartplotter soon. Budget £800 or so all in, incl charts.

Would value the advice of those of you who already have them on which plotters & charts are recommended, installation tips, etc.

Now I\'ll sit back and wait for the usual deluge of useful stuff...

One consideration is limited dash space on the boat, I might have to mount the display overhead, so something which could be mounted the \"wrong\" way up might be necessary, the Garmin 2006 looks quite suitable in this respect.

Again, I\'d be interested in people\'s views on whether it\'s better to have a larger monochrome display or a smaller colour one.

Dont wast money on B&W if your budget can take in colour. B&W are great but you cant see them in bright light conditions, even in roof. Had a Garmin 2006 BW, in the roof, now have a 182c, on dash, cheaper colour model but would still go that rout cos\' the colour screen is so much easier to read. Brand? Garmin evey time, personal opinion of course. Agee with Norman, FF aint so hot? for FF\'s I use Koden, like many of the comercial skippers, built like a brick s**t h***se appear basic, but once you have learned to read the screen, there aint no hiding place!

Don\'t know if this will help, but if you look on eBay you can get brand new boxed BlueChart software very cheap which includes the download key to one area of your choice!

As Jason says its fantastic, it has the everythign marked on it, tide times, you can plan routes, add alsorts, set it up so you can tell your drift and so on and so on and so on..I bet this time next year your still finding out new things it can do.

I\'ll be happy enough as soon as I\'ve discovered the \"Find your own *rs*h*le with both hands\" menu.

As for putting us on the fish, Jason, you should know my boat is the special \"conservation\" model. There\'s a special gizmo (The \"Fishloser\"(TM)) which excludes fish from a 100meter zone extending in all directions from the boat. I\'ve yet to find the off switch.

LOL what with that and the fish distractor we should do more for conservation than a fleet full of decommisioned trawlers. LOL
