  • My Favorite Boat Fishing Rig

I have been charter boat wreck and hard ground fishing on a regular basis having rediscovered sea fishing a couple of years ago and I am really enjoying the sport and day out. One of the downsides we all face is the amount of gear lost when wrecking in particular. I will always lose gear as I try to change depths as we pass over the wreck to be near the bottom. I have had a fair bit of success (nearly all my decent catches of cod and pollack up to 9 LBs) using a 4ft shock leader trace with a single Fladen Luminous 8/0 Squid Rig (the pink ones not white) baited with some rag. These squid rigs come in packs of 3 so I split them into single rigs and jig very slowly up and down to try to mimick the action of a squid in the water. I have tried all sorts of alternatives including daylights and the best of shads, artifical worms etc which are expensive and keep coming back to my squid rig. The best news is that you can but these for £1.30p for a pack of three from Shop location information here Product Search: in Middlesborough when you buy ten packs........I collected mine at the shop as the postage is expensive.
Thats less than 50 p per rig and with a 10 oz weight at around £1.40p you have a killer rig for under £2. Unlike the 3 hook rigs or 3 hook daylights I find I lose less gear than most and the cost is reasonable. The cod in particluar seem to swallow the whole rig and only a couple have get off. I searched the internet for the squid rig and you can pay as much as £8 on ebay for exactly the same squid rig. Best of luck!

Hi Squid, welcome to nesa mate,
Great advice there I'm sure lots will gain from it, always good to have regular wreck fishers to help answering questions.
I agree its often better to just concentrate on one hook/lure on your line when wrecking, this helps the loss of gear as obviously less to snag.
We find similar when shad fishing as we have only the weight and the single snood with shad attached, this too lessens the tackle loss.

    many thanks

Have to agree; the 'pink squid' have served me well, with Ling up to 13lb. I have always used the three squid rig size 8/0 but think I will try splitting them, see how it goes, I do find you tend to get more Ling bites than Cod bites on 'Pink' don't know if it's just coincidence or not.

                Lead weights

Hi Keith I have bought a batch of 12 and 14 oz weights from dustybin at Horden at just over a quid each. Is that more like the right price?
