Whats the chances of catching a lemon sole on rod and line out of the tyne ? has anyone caught one ? the reason i ask this is because on sunday in all that wind a friend who tagged along with us in his boat caught one on a pirk !! The gill netters get them regular in there catches ! it`s the first ive heard of ...........or is it just the fact that everone is cod daft and dont fish for them ?

Bert there are many species that are around off the north east coast but no one targets them, as in the north they fish for the freezer or fish to sell a bit to pay for there day, this is the complete opposite on the south coast and that is why they have species days

Plaice fishing from the north east done right would yeild great results but ask 4 lads to go out all day fishing for a few flattys and see the reaction you get

I can openly admit to wearing cod blinkers! As much as I would love a go at plaice and maybe turbot it always seems to end up chasing cod or an associated member of the cod family!
Saying that I am definitely going to spend more than an hour chasing plaice next time off!
As to sole! I haven't got a clue as to how to target them but if I remember rightly I read they are mainly caught a t night?

I have often wondered why its nearly always cod and ling that gets reported from the guys lucky enough to be boat owners or passengers.

I love the thrill of potentially catching a monster but I can also imagine a nice quiet day anchored catching prime flatfish and maybe other species. Even the skipper can relax, no running back to the wheelhouse every few minutes to set up the drift then dash back and drop for one reel in

Some of the small turbot caught from the beaches must have bigger relatives lurking out there somewhere

Its not all about size after all

right tactics, right ground, I am sure you will get them, there have been very few caught around here, but mainly from the shore.

Well I'm partial to a little bit flattie bashing and have had plaice ,dabs ,founders ,turbot and brill from the flattie beds at the back of the north pier .. but it looks like I've found another muddy patch off souter point so I can feel another flattie bashing session coming on. And lemons may be the target ... watch this space

Bert dont forget that sole are nocturnal feeders

they catch them down the holderness coast but always late into the evening

there used to be a bridlington charter boat do evening sole trips

Yes M8 i have caught one a few weeks back as i was fishing the walkway at Shields but thats the only one i have caught up till now but the weather has/nt been that great for them as you need a bit sunshine where Lemon sole Plaice and dabs are concerned as that is when they make their way up river when there is a bit heat and they start breeding then.
