Well guys, after four charter trips for me with not a Cod or Ling in sight and the humilliation of being spanked by Lynn each time, today on my 5th trip I finally managed my first Cod of 2012. Hurrah! It sure has been a long time coming. Here's the story.
We sailed out on Lady Elsie about 745am, almost no breeze and a gentle swell.
We steamed up the coast and stopped opposite Crimdon Dene Caravan Park which we had left some 45mins before. After being the only one to start with a shad on Saturday, out the Tyne and failing miserably, I went with the crowd and sent down baited Hokkies. With only Whiting coming to the boat, I changed to a Berkelys Hollow Belly and within minutes I was into what I suspected was a Cod. Sure enough up into view, through the gloom, came the unmistakable outline of a Cod. I shouldn't write on here what I said but it went something like...................... "Thank fck for that!"
To the boat came a nice Cod around 3lbs. Next drop, another Cod of around the same size, I was on fire
Next drop, another cod, this time bigger, about 4lbs. And again next drop....... bang, better take, rod bends over and the Skipper is over with the net. After about 4 mins, he nets me a Cod of just over 9lbs. You couldn't make this stuff up! Four previous charter trips, nearly 40 hours fishing with no Cod, then in 4 consecutive drops, over say 30 mins I have 4 Cod in the box...............who knows why?
Anyway after all that action, I reckoned I deserved a cigarette and a Pepsi.... So satisfying.
The others on the boat were catching Whiting, but the odd good Cod too, all on baited Hokkies and soon Lynn got her first to the boat of about 3lbs.
The wind freshened and the swell grew a bit and things went really quiet, I lost my by now, "lucky hollow belly" on the bottom , so it was back to the hokkies for me.
After a while, we moved to a wreck, which produced for Lynn, as she boated a good 7.5lb Cod.
I was so pleased for her, as I was feeling terrible, having caught many more Cod than her, including my 9 pounder.....................Was I teuch! I had been basking in the glory of finally out fishing her for once and when I saw her rod bend over I was crazy jealous in case it was bigger than mine! Still all's well that ends well, it was smaller than mine and about 5 mins later I landed another Cod of about 5lbs just to confirm my superiority on the day
A satisfying box of fish.
A big thanks to the Skipper for a great day. The other guys caught some good Cod too, but my focus was elsewhere/
Friday sees 2 of our friends from Scotland joining us on North Star, along with local guy Steve for a day with Skipper Jim. I dare say, normal service will be resumed and Lynn will give me a fishing gubbing as usual, but at least for now I can take the bragging rights.
A view from the boat on the way in. Can't wait for Friday now!
