What line for boat reel?

If you buy moss green braid from chinafishing supplies or stores or something on eBay , it's power pro braid that comes, takes about a week to get here and is the real deal, I got snagged on a net or something springy over a wreck last time out with 50 lb moss green and tied it off to a cleat hoping for a break, half an hour later we were still anchored to the wreck, it's good stuff.
I've got a couple of reels spooled with 30lb, it's fine till you snag up on something, then it can cost you tackle where the 50lb can often pull the hooks straight rather than snap off.

It needs to be used in conjunction with a suitable rod and reel, if you use it on a 80lb test rod and a locked solid reel it will snap a lot more than it will on a 12lb test rod and a reel with the drag set properly , so yes you can fish with 30 lb braid but remember that you are

If using 50lb braid, does anyone ever use a lighter nylon line, maybe 30lb to act as a leader. Rather than something stronger than your 50lb braid, a nylon that will snap before your braid does if you get snagged?

I think so mate, i'd rather lose a bit cheap nylon than re-spooling with braid after every snag.
I've never been out on a boat yet, but i'm trying to think of everything that'll help 'is before i do.

A rig is made of mono and is generally the only thing to go....therefore no leader required

the issue with braid is not so much the breaking strain,but more the "abrasion resistance".

ie 30lb is plenty strong enough,but so fine in diameter that it chafes thru very easily

50lb,still very low dia.but has a little more resistance

all i use is the 45lb momo from boyes, £3 a spool, does the job fine, not pulled up any monster fish mind, but handled decent size fine

The abrasion problem isn't such a big issue when boat fishing, the line rarely gets dragged over rocks and such like it does when casting from the shore, as for a lighter leader , I often tie a few inches of amnesia between the lead and the snap swivel so if the lead gets snagged the braid won't break half way up the line somewhere. The biggest problem with 50lb braid is when pulling for a break you have to be very careful how you do it, it will cut through your hand like cheese wire and if you wrap it round a piece of wood to pull, which is the preferred method it slips very easily unless it is crossed over itself and cuts through itself if it is crossed over itself. I wind the spare line onto the reel as far as I can until I'm leaning over the side of the boat with the rod pointing at the snag and clamp the spool tight with my hand and pull back, this usually results in a break at a knot on the rig somewhere, or the knot tying the snap swivel to the mainline, I've been warned however that it's not good to put so much pressure on the reel..
Last time out I snagged up on a rope or net or something springy on a wreck, no amount of pulling would break the hold so I tied off to a cleat and waited, still no break, we were anchored by the braid, eventually I had to wrap the braid round something and pull, I ended up snapping the braid at the cleat because it tightened to there before it tightened to the snag , I wrapped more line and pulled again and eventually the braid snapped at the snap swivel but it took some doing.

It's a heavy rod for 30lb braid , but you can still use it , just remember there is no stretch in braid and little give in your rod so the chances of snapping off on a strike or a snag are a lot higher unless you set your reel clutch to give line on the strike.
