  • Kayaks - wetsuits, dry suit, waders or waterproofs ?

I'm not trying to start a safety debate here on whether waders are or aren't a safe option for kayak fishing.

From the photographs posted by those who partake in kayak fishing it appears that there is a wide variety of clothing worn.

What are you guys using, and why ?

My mate is about to take the plunge (in a manner of speaking ) but the cost factor of all the additional kit and clothing required over and above the kayak is hammering him.

Any thoughts regarding suitable clothing options that don't stray into dry suit prices ?

In the meantime I will try to persuade him to register for membership here and he can ask his own blimmin questions

I've worn chest waders in the past but a drysuit is by far the safest way to go out on the water more so in the winter..
But at the moment I've wearing breathable waders and a cag top but with the waders I always wear a belt with it just in case.
Problem with waders is your cant have a p#### unless you pull them down but with a good drysuit it comes with a convenience zip.
Anyone with have their own opinion on this but most will go for drysuit or wetsuit and cag in the summer months.

I will soon be buying a s.o.t. kayak for fishing. I've done a lot of research on Drysuit/Wetsuit, and I've come to the conclusion Drysuit. The reason being the North Sea is cold at any time of year and if you capsize water drains your body heat in minutes. It's got to be worth that extra few quid.

Tell him to check out "Crewsaver Dry Suits" on Ebay, few new and second hand bargains going.

As beano says the drysuit is the best option but i often wear a wetsuit or a shortie in the summer on the best days and when in company. If i was alone and any distance out it would always be drysuit for safety reasons. (hyperaemia)

Never tried waders so cannot comment on them.

A drysuit alone will not save you from hyperthermia, what you wear under will, as already indicated dress for the water temp and not air temp. I always wear a drysuit and adjust the layers under, a few thin layers better than one thick layer and a wicking layer next to skin better still...........Dave.
