  • Kayak rod

A little help off the lads fishing from Kayaks.

Do you use any special rod for fishing off a yak,it seems a shorter and lighter rod would suit this type of fishing.

And the other question is do you use light braking strain line because if you get snagged up with heavy mono/braid it could just anchor you up..?

    Hi H

I always go for the lightest rod as its better sport I use the fladen maxximus 10/20lb and 20/40ld 1 piece 6ft cracking little rod ideal for using shads and other lures and I use upto 4oz max.
Other lads may have other views but these work great for me.

And I've always used braid as its strong and thin which produces less drag and if you get snagged up you can go back on yourself and try and retrieve it that way but I always use a weak link just incase.

    Hope this helps

        Hi.
I use a fladden junior ice pike,
Fladen Junior Ice Pike Kayak / Boat Rod
Cheap as chips, and you get a great fight! however, not the best for hauling up big fish, once hooked into something very big, but struggled to get if away from the bottom and eventually snagged up. Ideal for fish upto about 7lb.
Braid is the best choice, I use 20lb.

Use any boat rod if your just starting out till your comfortable ,i use 30lb braid with 25lb snoods with a rotten bottom to weight,as Steve says most snags you can paddle back to release. Rods i use now are 8ft anagra pulled a 14lb ling in with it last year and a 7ft ugly stick both of which i use in the boat. longer rod is usefull to reach round front of yak if you need to move to opposite side of the yak, Hope this helps however it all comes down to personal choice............Dave.

Prefer a longer rod around 8 foot but light. Braid everytime for me.

                            fladen maxximus rod.

Got a bit lucky here, was talking to a mate of mine today and he's a agent for Fladen.
He has loaned me a 10/20lb class full carbon rod to try out and if I like it he will order me one at cost less 5%.

Must say they feel very good and should be really good sport to use,he was telling me he's had tope on them...now that must have been something else.

I'm thinking of the 20/40lb class, gives a bit better all rounder, but will try this loan rod out first.
                            Thanks for the advice.
                            cheers H

Hi I use a greys boat rod one 6-12lb class with and the other 30-50lb I was told to try and keep the but sections as small as possible for moving the rod around. the but has a habit of getting caught up in your PDF if its long. Try and keep the line strength to a minimum I use around 20lb strength. I if you snag up it can be a bit tricky getting out and you could tip your self out going for a break on a heavy line. Other than that keep it simple, enjoy and be safe.
