Can anybody out there give me an idea of what tickets/qualifications i would need to get to become a skipper, from basic level to skipper level also how long would it take and at what cost (rough guess)
just as another career option
Thanks for any advice given
Cheers Neil......
i dont think you should even try and get involved in another thread about skippers billy turbot seen as how you were COMPLETELY WRONG about the sapphire skipper and probably caused him a lot of unnecessary agrovation. atb wandy.
HOLD ON THERE
the guy asked for advice
seems theres not many on the forum to help him the MCA/RYA is the government body that deals with charter boats ,is this correct
pm sent look forward to reply

Bit harsh this.
i watched the whole discussion very carefully
The discussion was about safety and transparency of skippers certificates, skills, licences etc.
It went out of hands and people insulted each other, which was a mistake and I highlighted that on several occasions.
Billy was wrong about Sapphires licence, but was right that safety matters.
NESA put a -sort-of- apolgy up to inform everybody that Sapphire is legal.
Now it seems that Billy has moved on and advises a novice on how to do it correctly.
Thanks for the reply Billy m8,AS always seems to end up in some sort of debate
This post was for a bit of help/advice on what and how to gain my skippers ticket starting with what level i can start at with no/very little
knowledge to final level of skipper(support vessels for wind turbines)
just wanted a rough guess on how long it would take and how much it would cost me
Thanks Neil.........

no not another keyboard warrior i have a life and am not glued to the computer 24/7. this site is for giving advice from what i saw when reading the sapphire threads was not you giving advice but trying to demolish a mans livlyhood and buisness. at one point i seem to remember you asking for people to come forward with dates and other details of there past trips on the boat so you could try and get the man prosecuted for fraud, who are you the police??? that was definatly not giving advice. i'll tell you what it was, jelousy. you saw someone offering a trip with a difference and wanted to bring him down, for whatever pathetic reason, running to the coastguard, the local marine office and even the police causing alot of fuss and probably damaging the mans reputation and in the end he had the necessary qualifications. so next time you feel like interfering with something that does not concern you just stop for a minute and think to yourself THIS SITE IS FOR GIVING ADVICE.
Many years ago a fellow called Jaybee ( John Bridges ) with the help of other people like Alan Charlton who writes in the Sunday Sun started this site as a friendly sea angling site where people could go on line and see what was being caught on what methods and somewhere people could have a good crack and help one and other out, something that seems to have changed.
Getting back to your original posting.
Depending on your experience I would not be ashamed to signing up for an RYA Day Skippers course.
I see you come from Blyth I’m sure They do these course’s at night school at King Gorge’s School Morpeth or the Marine college at South Shields .
You might think this is a basic course but it is a good foundation for the coastal /offshore Yacht masters Certificate of theory .
After a practical exam you can gain a Certificate of competence which is acceptable
For wind farm work and with a commercial endorsement you can take people to Sea.
Another avenue is to sign up to a Sea Training school I think there’s one that operates out of Hartlepool and another out of the Tyne.
Going through a Sea training school would be the most expensive route but the quickest and most probably the easiest, Who is going to sign up to a training establishment with a large failure rate ???.
Another route is the Sea Fish Training scheme of which I have no idea what goes on and by the sounds of it nobody else does including the MCA and the RYA.
Whatever route you take the best of luck and what ever course you take you will come out Knowing more than when you started, all the best

1st of all did you read the email from the MCA
2nd of all just want anglers to be safe
3rd I need to get out I fished on Thursday fished at Whitehaven
also out on Sunday away to Scotland
and when the weather settles will be on boats
think last year I done about 40 boat trips which for me is just a normal year,so there you have it NOT GLUED TO MY KEYBOARD,
so take it your another one who thinks MCA don't have any power, very surprised you replied if your read the email right, "paragraph 7"
you must have joined to have your say, have you done much fishing this week ???????????????????????????????????????????????
As alf points out the MCA/RYA is the way to go as the seafish thing is a bit of a grey area ,and looks like a lot of there paper work does not stand up to MCA criteria
and this guy asked for ADVICE all i said was go to the MCA/RYA website that means i give him ADVICE
You need plenty of practical experience before you ever considering about getting a ticket to be a skipper a peice of paper means nothing out there in safety way of things you have the practical experience peoples lives are in your hands i have seen plenty of people who think going to sea and taking passengers is easy they get a massive shock when it comes to reality the sea can be cruel place if you dont know what you are doing.

paul.
WELL SAID PAUL as you say the sea can turn nasty as we know and thats when the experience comes in to its own
doesnt matter how many times you go fishing per year Billy at the end of the day you still tried to ruin somebody for no reason. you are plain and simply a slimy little grass. it wouldnt suprise me if you were the fat kid at school who was bullied and can only make yourself feel good by pulling other people down. happy fishing (if you even have a rod)
