£40 isn’t a lot of money for a boat reel, if it is durable then it is very good value and a capable for wrecking and rough ground. Abu’s reputation has taken a bit of a hit recently so I’d want to have a look at the reel before buying and like you’re doing, ask around for feedback.
Lever drag reels are easier to use than ones like the Abu with a star drag, and are worth the extra cost if you’re going to use it a lot. Also, people either love or loathe boat reels with level winds, at least you have the option of removing it if you don’t like it.
Even the smaller reel has a high line capacity and will need to be half filled with backing before loading with a 300yard spool of braid.
