  • How!!! far from dry land

I was looking through the web links and found a report of an angler traveling between 30 and 98 miles from port on a 16\'6\" Orkney fastliner.

Don\'t know the website but here is how to find it.

    Web Links
UK Sea Fishing Boats & Equipment
    Boats over15ft to 19ft updated
    Orkney Boats
    Strikeliner 16+

I own a 16ft Fastliner and don\'t go out past 5-6 miles. Just wondered how far out other anglers go in relation to their boats size, or if on my boat you would go out a greater distance than I do.

Hi mate. I used to own a fastliner my first boat . Used to travel about 20 miles out from port max had a 25hp Suzuki and 10 gallon tank and emptied it every time out.

21 ft Inboard diesel ......... usually fish wrecks between 5 and 10 mile. sometimes go 15 mile out or travel up coastline 20 mile (to amble0
average all up miles per trip seems to be about 35-40

My boat and distances pretty much same as Normans . Planning some long hauls this year though :P . If the weather was kind and the good turn of speed you have , why not ? I would think twice about 30 miles oot like

            here\'s the link:

blimey! 30 miles from land, in a straight line out and back thats 60 miles! How big a fuel tank has it got, especially with a 2 stroke

I\'ve got a johnson 40, and can empty a 6 gallon tank frighteningly quickly. Last summer in scotland was out in it nearly every day just pottering(20Knots!) about, never more than 2 or 3 miles out. According to the gps, covered about 30 miles in a fornight, burnt over 15 gallons

If you read it properly it claims they started out with trips 30 miles out, and \"graduated to a final trip some 98 miles from home port, well over the edge of the continental shelf\"

thats a 200 mile round trip. Is it just me or is there a faint whiff of pork about that.

if they took it steady and burnt a conservative gallon an hour at say 10 knots, thats a 10 hour trip out using 10 gallons, plus the same coming back. A minimum of 20 gallons and 20 hours steaming time, in an open boat - in the north atlantic??

If they got there foot down and doubled the speed, that would at least double the fuel consumption, 40 plus gallons (minimum) in an open boat

Fat lot of good a 2.4metre vhf antenna on a 16 foot fibreglass boat would do them 100 mile offshore

If there\'s interest in the graveyard, are there any charter boats that could get out there, bigger boats, more safety and the like, might be an idea if enough peeps are intersted to charter Mr Skinner or someone for the day, least that way there\'d be more fun for the skippers to fish rather than worry about finding the marks etc

I booked a couple of NESA midweek trips out with Alan last year and they were very popular.
Was thinkin\' of doing the same again this Summer

                    Hiya,

It\'s true.. they did go that far out, but they were towed most of the way by a large trawler that acted as the mother ship.

The had an interesting moment one morning when they woke to find the boat missing.. the tow rope had come undone during the night. They still managed to find it though

i would have know problem in taking my boat to the graveyard, would feel happier though with another boat as company just in case of problems.
The furthest out i went last year was 20 miles, but went to hartlepool 25 miles for the weekend several times, and once to whitby 46 miles.
i have a 200 litre fuel tank and can make whitby and back without refueling
