The season that was 2011! To sum the season up in a phrase it would be “short and sweet”!
It started earlier than we had ever been out before (21st of March) with the Northern hills and three consecutive blanks. One of those trips included a flat calm day and perfect drift speed on the wrecks but no fish! Unfortunately it ended early as well due to the part exchange of Grolwer.
The tank goggles were out for the first couple of trips!
Micky started to hit the fish consistently and in numbers in April and May…….whilst I was at work!
On my return it was wrecking in earnest with the first trip wrecking in late May producing the first mackerel of the season and the first doubler! A ling for myself.
We were also accompanied on that day by a pod of dolphins which was to become a common theme for the whole season, as well as a fair few minkie whales. Another fantastic part of the experience!
The next trip out was the trip of the season for Micky, he hooked into a whopper and skillfully landed a massive 26lb6 ling. To say we were both over the moon is an understatement. Two plonkers who are relatively new to wreck fishing in their own boat nabbing a fish like that is unbelievable!
It still makes my sides hurt watching the video that accompanies the fish. I didn’t think the fish was half as big and he was just messing about getting it in!
The fact that he had another cracking cod the same day and I had a double ling that went un-noticed might show we are doing something right!
Next trip of note was the Bob White Memorial, unfortunately we couldn’t winkle out any monsters that day and I had the biggest fish between us on the boat, a low doubler cod.
In the top five if I remember rightly but hopefully this year will be better!
I was home all of July and had a lot of solo trips out through the week fishing mainly the inshore wrecks. The fishing this season was spectacular and a cheeky morning session resulted in these;
All to rubber lures.
One of the latter trips of the season we were up fishing the Northern Wrecks and had a great day on the wrecks. They went off at slack water so we decided to head for Craster Skeers. To say that we had never experienced such frenetic fishing is an understatement. For the whole of slack waster and into the flood the longest it took to hook a fish after hitting the bottom was 12 seconds! After an hour and a half my arms were killing and we tried the inner skeer wrecks on the way home for no-where near as much success as the skeers!
We had one wreck in particular that was on fire all year long as long as some tide was running past it, flood or ebb it was ultra consistent.
The best lure this year was by far a .#@$@ ! I can’t give the exact details other than it was made of rubber!!!!!! If it works as well off the Tyne as it does at Amble I shall let the cat out of the bag at the end of the season!
On reflection it was another great season with Micky taking the honors with the biggest cod and ling!( Must have been a flook!both!) The biggest cod was just over 15lb and a cracker to go with his ling.
We were in double figures (Just) of double figure fish for the first time ever as well. Nowhere near Stingray’s numbers but we shall endeavor this year!
Up and coming for this year is a late delivery from Santa Clause due on the 1st of March in the form of the new boat. A quicksilver pilothouse 640 with a 115 on the back. I am like a little kid and I know Micky is the same. I keep having pangs of guilt about being selfish and spending more than I have ever spent on a car on a boat but I am coping with the attacks and I am sure I will get over them when she arrives!
Another positive is that all boat records are reset and all up for grabs with the new boat so Micky’s yarker ling is just a memory!
The only dark cloud on the horizon is the predicted closure of Royal Quays around the delivery date for annual maintenance! Bloody typical! I will be due back at work on the 5th of March so I may not even get to sea in her before heading back which is a thought I am dreading!
On a final note just a huge good luck and safe seas for all on here! A cracking forum with some cracking members!
