Launch ramps

getting close to getting us a boat (days hopefully if they accept my offer)...we are just wondering if people have a list of launch ramps or places we can launch the boat as for now its on a trailer till we get the cash to get a mooring (and find a cheap one spare!)...we are looking from north shields upto amble aslong as there is a decent ramp (Concrete), and if help is available as my boat buddy has bad knees (guess who is gonna be incharge of launching ) he mentioned some places help you launch with there tractors?? so hopefully to save me endless phonecalls and internet searches i was hoping a few of you knew a few off the top of your head.

by the way its a 15ft CJR (altho im sure they are only 14/16ft) i will post pics if we get it.

if we like the boating/fishing (i say we ..i mean him!) and the freedom then in a couple of years we are gonna empty the bank and get a much better outfit, but for our first boat i think we are keeping it cheap and safe.

you might find a 6 month contract in one of the marina might not be too bad,compared with the cost of traiing,and the risks and hazards of launch and retrieveplease dont think that i think your not capable of launch and retrieve,but you mentined your marra had bad knees.

high tide,loosened the straps off etc,backed the trailer into the water off she come no bother

haha yeah those experiences are the ones im hoping to avoid!..im not a fan of launch and retrieve either, i prefer just to leave it in a marina so if i fancy a few hours out its not a ballache...however the other half of the share wants to be able to take it to lakes and lochs and further afeild up the sea...so i said we will attempt a few L&R...if its as much of a failure as i feel its going to be then i best be saving for moorings!

boat launching from a trailer is quite easy, and after a while becomes easier still....

we've done it for years, however the first few times can be quite "fun"

i'm sure when you decide which way to go, just post on here and you'll get loads of advice..

There’s a good concrete ramp on the on the side of the river, not quite within your North Shield limit but within sight of it. It is run by the local council. Boat launching ramp | South Tyneside Council
North of the river, there’s a ramp a Cullercoats harbour, The beach lifeguards will sell either a day ticket or annual pass, but they used to only be available from the end of May. The road down is steep with a tight dog-leg and unless the tide is in you’ll need to drive onto the beach which can make launch and retrieve tough – top tip is to let a lot of air out of you trailer tyres to spread the weight and stop them sinking in to the sand when in the water.
Next stop St Mary’s Island. This would have to be a place of last resort. Reversing the trailer down the narrow road to the causeway ramp needs care. You would also need to time the launch or recovery to coincide with high water and a flat calm sea. In a shallow draft boat only, approach the gap between the ramp and the island, squarely from the south then, watching the shallow depth, motor over the causeway to where your trailer is waiting. Also waiting will be a gathering crowd, all hoping for something to go wrong and setting cameras, tripods and camera phones at the ready to capture and upload their story to Look North before you’re even out the water….. I imagine(d).

The council run a ramp at Seaton Sluice, it looks tough. There used to be a sign on the ramp with contact details.

I went through the same process as you and after a few launches with helpers ended up booking a berth at the Royal Quays marina, which was cheaper than a new clutch for the car would have cost.

Others manage very well on their own though; finding a launch site that suits you makes a big difference.

thanks guys...we have decided to try a resevoir as our first attempt haha...then after that we are going to try amble or newbiggin. (the boat we were buying turned out to be a scammer...so gonna try and hunt another boat in the next couple of days to buy)....looking at maybe a shetland 535 or dory CJR 14-17 just depending which is best for our waters.

Thereis a tractor launch at Beadnel , but it's quite expensive , I used to launch at Amble , it's not too bad a launch but you need the tide quite high.
I eventually put my boat in Amble marina but regularly brought it home for cleaning and maintenance , even in a marina, there's nothing to stop you taking the boat out and towing it around the country if you wanted. Launching is a doddle with the right trailer and the right slip , I did it single handed all the time without any problems , if you decide to go that way ask on here and we'll talk you through it step by step

im pretty sure i will be taking you up on that offer lol...yes i'm sure after a few attempts we might get the hang of it...but there is just so many factors against us for launching and the sharing partner still dosnt realise lol...so i said we can give it go and let him try his way ...then i'll sort us out some moorings when he gets fed up
