So Lynn and I arrived last Monday for a week in Sand-Le-Mere caravan site. Carl (Simpson) from the Whitby site kindly offered to meet us on Tuesday at Spurn Point. Carl brought a spare spade and showed us how to dig Lug, then showed us up by getting about 8 for every 1 we managed! LOL We then fished the incoming tide, while all the time the sky was getting angrier. A few flaties to Carl and one to Lynn, then it was time to move up the point in search of the elusive Bass (well for us!). However after a while the wind and rain got too much for us and we cried off, leaving Carl to face the elements. He was rewarded with a good flattie and a Bass after we had raced to the caravan to dry off. What a lovely guy Carl is, happily imparting his knowledge and experience onto us. Thanks for a great day Carl.
The rest of the week produced a fair few flatties off Tunstall beach and a wee spur...well I think it was a spur.......or a smoothound maybe?, but Lynn and I are still waiting for our first ever Bass. Wednesday we had a trip out of Bridlington.......poor day, with only small Whiting and loads of mackerel, which are great off the pier, but a pain off the boat.
Then Lynn and I got the dreaded call about Shy Torque breaking down last Thursday, just as I was making the rigs, sipping beer in the caravan and looking forward to our trip on Saturday. OMG a week in Yorkshire with no Whitby trip! After many telephone calls and a post on the Whitby forum, we got booked on "Charisma" on Sunday, so with a bit of re-jigging of our schedule, we were sorted.....phew!
I feel for Rich, breaking down and losing so much business at this time of year, and who knows how we would have done on Shy Torque, but the day on "Charisma" was fantastic, a real "yesterday" day!
At only £30 for a 10 hr trip it's a steal! Plus, Skipper Jim had his mate Dave onboard who was great with advice and the tangles, but the piece de resistance was that he offered to fillet the fish for anyone who wanted that! Now let me say, he wasn't looking for money, but he must have filleted about 20 fish per person and at £30 a head for the trip, it was only right to slip him a few quid for a beer. I might be wrong, but I didn't notice anyone else doing the same......and they say the Scots are tight! ......I think you Yorkshire lads beat us hands down in that particular contest! LOL
We had so many cod, best to 9.5lbs (yes Lynn caught that one!!),that we started returning ones about 3lb and under.....unheard of for us!
Skipper Jim is a great man, with loads of knowledge and is only too happy to pass on his experience. Dave is just a fantastic guy and we learned a lot on the day, not least how to fillet fish! Nothing is too much trouble for either of them.We had a memorable day and if you are wondering why I called it a "yesterday" day, I have pinched that from Jim, as in "You should have been here yesterday!" We were other peoples yesterdays!
So in conclusion, if you are looking for a great day out on a charter boat, look no further than "Charisma". Must be the cheapest in Whitby.
