Herd they can cause a lot of tangles on the drift.
Maybe they're popular when anchoring, might sit on the bottom better than a ball or quick drop type.

I certainly wouldn't even consider a bell shaped weight for any of the fishing I do , might use them on a set of scales to weigh flour or something , nice flat bottom to stop them rolling off

aye ray I`m with you on that one, they look or seem as if they'd tumbe on the way down rather than just pick up speed. Suppose only good thing about them is the ability to adjust the size when pouring but would rather just have a few different moulds myself ....

looked at the mould (in view to potential purchase) and dismissed idea fairly quickly...yes they'd be great for quick pour and turning out a load quickly but that massive flat surface on the bottom would cause all sorts of problems I'm sure

I have to disagree chaps used both types quick drop and bell shaped, had no problems with either, The bell shape i use are 1lb in weight and work perfectly well ,what i normally find is some other anglers using about a 8oz lead for wreck fishing, causing havoc with the other anglers on the boat

Agree big fish.I try to get every one to use the same weight,if not, shape leads and mainline,That way all tackle should get pulled about the same by the tide.
BTW,thats only with a trip I've arranges with lads I know.

looking to get some molds for ball leads, what would be the best weight to go for to use for drift fishing and wrecking off northumberland, and what are the pros and cons of ball leads

dont have balls myself heh heh,but if i had they would be 8 to 10oz for ground and 12 to 16 for wrecks

i guess they less likley to get snagged, but i dont really know

I seem to fish a bit lighter than most , I fish 30lb braid and 4-6oz leads on the ground and try a 7oz on the wrecks before going up to 8 or 10 if I find I have to , I don't fish multiple hook rigs though which helps keep the weight needed down to a minimum , my favourite pirks are 200grms but I have the same pattern in 300 grams for when the drift picks up (or at least I did before the wrecks ate them all last time out )
I find a 7oz torpedo lead works a 4" shad perfectly most of the time , which suits me fine , I hate dragging excess lead up to the boat all the time and enjoy the fight of the fish more with less lead for it to drag around.
If I do want to fish bait , I still try and keep the weight down to a minimum by fishig a one hook rig over the wrecks , but can get away with a standard 3 hook daylight or hokkai rig on the ground.
I see people advocating light rods and line , yet big leads still seem to be the norm , I can't fish a pound of lead on a 12lb rod , it just dosn't feel right.
I fish mostly alone , so no other lines to tangle with , but I like my line straight up and down (most of the time ) so tangles with others still shouldn't be a problem .

aye ray agree about lighter being best, and if i fished alone i woul knock at least a couple of ounces off weights i suggested

but on a charter vessel, unless you have a dozen that know the ropes, light is a nightmare

We've tried the ball weights and although they look the biz and seem to go down well they are almost unmanageable on a rocking and rolling boat. They simply roll all over which means you can never lay them down on a raised surface , locker or seat as the chances are they will roll off whiping a 6/0 hook behind them at lightening speed.
I'm with Deano on choice of basic lead sinker these lie on the gunnels or on the locker no matter how much the boat rolls and only move when YOU chuck em'

just my opinion of course ...
