Well after I snapped my rod last week I've bought myself

Shakespheare Ugly Stick 6ft 30-80lb line rating single piece (with Fuji guides)
      Rod

Penn 22 GTO reel (4.3:1 nice low geared to crank in the fish)
      Reel

Dynon 3000 55lb braid to fill the spool.
      Braid

I am not saying this is the cheapest option but I've now been boat fishing for just over a year now and now know that I want to invest in some nice kit that will be used in anger.
      2011 Catch's so far
      ---------------------------------------
      Cod: 13 / Ling: 0 / Herring: 4 / Pollock: 1
      Biggest: Cod 6Lb

reet then - steer clear of the offshore rods as mine snapped yesterday

I still rate the solid carbons very highly though
        Ooh a new vid!

Thought Norman said it was his rod that YOU snapped

Did it snap with a fish on or were you snagged on the bottom?
I nearly bought one after reading your post but opted for the Kenzaki - it arrives tomorrow

It snapped on a snag, but other rods cope fine without snapping...I think the prob is that it's an equal length 2 piece, it snapped at the joint

possibly unlucky but like with most things it does tend to put you off buying another

I'll just have to fix my Ugly Stik as that's a rod what can take the pressure

EDIT: I still stand by my original comments regarding the rod - it was/is a very nice rod to fish with (except the snapping bit)

Hmm - my Kenzaki is 2 piece (equal lengths).
I can see how snapping can spoil the enjoyment of a rod - def would put me off

Hmmmmm, was thinking of getting an offshore 30/50 to use in Norway, not too sure now, but I suppose any rod has a chance of snapping!

I had a Shakespear Salt Braid rod that went off like a shot gun when trying to yank out of a snag, 1st time i used it as well , it ended up in 4 bits and in the drink , my fault though , the line gets wrapped round the priest now to pull out

Yes , that's how I learned not to try and yank out of a snag , same as you I started wrapping my line round a priest , but he died shortly afterwards so now I tie it off to a cleat and sit back and wait , I think it might have been Norman that suggested that somewhere ? much safer than pulling at snagged 50lb braid ina swell or a bumpy sea.
I've snapped loads of rods one way or another , I've snapped fly rods threading them up , they can take a hell of a lot of pressure at 90 degreees , but try and pull the line through the rings at an acute angle and pop goes a couple of hundred quid

i bought a fladen offshore from whitby angling and had the same prob but at the tip, bent it over only slightly and it snapped like a twig very brittle i thought, got a refund but ended up 16 squid out of pocket with postage.
guess where i wont be buying anymore fishing gear from.
