  • boat rod and reel advice needed

hello one and all, im looking to book up to go fishing and im wondering what rod and reels i should be looking at, pref on sarah jfk or the warlord so proberbly a mixture of wreck and rough ground fishing .
atm i own a slosh 30 and an older daiwa 175 ? think thats right, just im not sure if these reels will cut it. also the rods iv been looking at all look a lil flimsey. im wanting something capable of getting good size fish but not at the expence of the fight.
any help would be excellent thanks.

Hi Al, Your Slosh 30 will cope easily with the size of fish on our coast, i have been using a Shimano Triton Speedmaster for 3 years now with no problems.
As for the rod, look for a 15 - 20lb class Ugly Stik, or Kenzaki, rather than a 30/50lb poker. These rods have plenty tip action but stiffer at the butt, try looking for a second hand one, to save cash.
There are quite a few posts on here similar to this one, try the search facility for Boat Rods and Reels, good luck...

This is my second season getting out on the boats, last year I bought a Shakespeare 2in1 boat rod from Lathams 30/50lb and have to agree its like a poker. I was then given the same rod but a 20/30lb. Spot on. Only three weeks for my next trip. I missed the clubs last trip earleir this month. A bumper 240 Cod caught out of Craster, damn those night shifts.

I used braid for the first time on Saturday its the best you can feel the bottom and all the bites, dont try to pull it out of a snag with bare hands it cuts like a knife though butter i was told.
I use a Shimano TLD20 reel and a Fladen Maxximus solid carbon 20 60 lb rod, works for me.
