  • rya vhf radio course

im doing the rya vhf radio course this weekend, for those of you that have done it what is it like?

  • #2
If you are worried about failing, I wouldn't as I don't think they would let you. On my course a couple of guys couldn't quite get to grips with it (despite using a radio for years) and the bloke made sure they had got through by the end of the day.
I think you need to learn your phonetic alphabet before you go (alpha, bravo, Charlie, etc.). I read up a little before I went, but for my course I needn't have bothered.
Nice one for doing it, one less thing to worry about whilst out there, wether someone will want to see your license.
Also, you will feel more comfortable using it, meaning you are more likely to chat to your friends.
    Cheers,
    Geoff

Nowt to worry about it's more of a learning thing than being tested there is a test at the end but it's mostly common sense stuff.

what is the cost of it?
In order to become "old & wise", you must first be young & stupid.
Age and experience will beat youth and enthusiasm every time.
Youth and Skill is no match for Age and Treachery.

              VHF over !!

As above nothing to worry about course is long winded
But good all the same , do a few role plays
Using the simulated situations it's all easy stuff
              And well worth doing .
Ken who does the course is a canny bloke
              He will look after you.

Good luck and enjoy it . OUT !

I am a qualified instructor so don't stress about it mate.
Learning the phonetic alphabet will definetly be an advantage before the course and just think about what you want to say before you say it! I still have trouble with that!
Equally know your way around the set you are using and all the functions.

                Graham.

and never say "Over and Out" like the movies, theres no such thing ... either "over" and await a return or "out" and finished

The course is good and gives you the confidence to use the radio correctly .... then when your at sea you'll soon know who are the ones that have not done the course

                  enjoy ....

Thanks for that Chris. I did contact this fella over a year ago and he said that he'd get back to me when he had enough names to run the course. I think I'll call him again as it's quite handy for me to get to.

                            Regards Ian
