  • Spurr Dog

I have never caught a spurr dog well hooked but not landed and having 2 days targeting them on the boat..west coast.

THOUGHT RATHER THAN ME READ THE MILLIONS OF RESULTS ON GOOGLE I WOULD PICK YOUR BRAINS.

    Hook size?
    Best bait from the boat?
    Rig style?
Best state of the tide if any?
    And any other tips?

    Cheers for any replys.

I seem to remember them being pests, off Arran perhaps, wick with them. 11 year old and catching "sharks"

if you get into them, dosn't matter what rig you use as long as you have a chunk of fresh mackerel on the hook. Normally 6/0 fine wire hook, flatten the barb, keep bait close to the bottom and look out for the barbs, thankfully i have never been jabbed but have seen many an angler jabbed, in tears, bleeding profously, as they are helped off the boat and on their way to hospital. Done most of my spurdog fishing off Port Patrick/Logan, there used to be massive shoals but sadly the commercials got to them, think most went ofr fertilisers, although they are very good eating. Used to hit the odd shoal off Whitley Bay many moons ago. Amazing how quite a few will follow a hooked fish right to the boat.

I have caught a load when fishing in loch Etive on the self drive hire boats at Taynault. Any fish bait worked well Rich and any rig! There were loads of the things, we were just tied up to one of the salmon or mussel farm buoys and fished from there. The boat hire rates were really cheap as well if I remember correctly.
