  • Advice for the summer!

Right lads and lasses, couple of questions!

Probably take myself, dad and a mate or so out on the boat over the summer, probably july!! Been about five years since I was last out and every time was from Amble and on the Upholder! Does this boat still do trips and can you suggest any other good options, driving from Ashington?

Got an old 50lb class rod and Mitchell multiplier but will probably upgrade to a couple of cheapo combos! Question with the stamp of fish decreasing and generally inshore work will my Slosh 30 and Abu 7000 cope with this or is it not worth the risk to these! I know you can hire gear but its worth having the kit available and it seems like you pick up a boat combo cheap these days, any suggestions?

Also, muppets, day lights, Hokkais still doing the business? Baited/Unbaited? 30lb-50lb mono these days? Probably wont bother with braid for now!

    Cheers!!

i think aq 50lb might be a bit on the hard side nowadays, there is still some decent fish out there, but i think a 30lb rod would be more of a middle line as far as sport go's.

I use an Okuma magnetix reel, which is meant for the shore, but it has no problems for me on the boat.

As for terminal tackle, what works one day may not be as effective as the next day so its always best to have a wide ranging inventory of lures, jiggers etc, but yeah hokkais jiggers, daylights will all still do the business.
I would also take some shads, ive had days when fishing has been very slow, then you throw a shad on and you start picking fish up.

Try getting out on the "Bon Amy" from Craster, Skippers called Dougie, spot on fella, we use him for boat trips from work. Never failed to catch yet!

i agree with the other lads,a 20/30lb class rod is far better suited and youd be fine with your shore reels! i dont know how far your wanting to travel but if your willing to travel to hartlepool try the "famous" skippered by a lad called davey had some cracking catches with him

I would use what you already have if it works and see if you are going to be regular then invest in what suits you

as for time June is always one of the top months and there should be plenty of fish around then july is good but i would say june is best

as for line just get a spool of 30/40 cheap stuff and you will be sorted for your first trip

I go out on Upholder quite often and can`t fault Dave, the skipper, if the fish are there Dave will find them. As for tackle, I use a 20-30lb Ugly Stik and an old Penn Commander reel loaded with 40lb Braid which does me fine. Expect to lose a bit of tackle though as early season it`s all rough ground fishing.
