  • Raw Water Pump Update.

Thought i'd put this up in case anyone has to order a new Johnson raw water pump for a Nanni 5.250 TDI engine.
I've just tried the 2nd pump on the boat tonight and it doesnt fit . I've put some pics on for reference.
First pump had an oval flange on it, so i did'nt take it from the shop.

The second pump (pictured), has the correct flange, but the raised shoulder which locates into the block is too long, i thought it might have fit, but the recess the shoulder fits into on the block is too shallow. So its off to Storrar Marine again tomorrow to try again.
Both pumps were direct from Nanni, the latest one being £70 more than the first, thats now £467.00.
Hat off to the guy at Storrar, he's trying hard to sort it out , when i left today he said " Dont worry if it doesnt fit we'll sort it ".

jester, dont know if it would work but could you not have a spacer piece milled to reduce the depth on the collar so it gives you the correct amount of slip needed? might be worth a try if its going to save you a few quid!

Hi BA33, I took the pump back today, and left my old pump with them as i would like the correct pump, if thats not possible, the i'll look at taking the adaptor plate off the engine, which is held on by the 4 bolts you can see in the pic, and get it lathed out to suit the depth of the collar which is on the new pump in the pic.
If i do this the collar on the pump will be 2-3mm off the pinion you can see in the engine housing......Not sure if thats too close, so i'll give Storrar another chance to get the correct pump.....Cheers...Chris...

I know it means stripping down a new pump but could you not transfer the new internals to your old housing?
            Cheers, Keith.

use the Pansy method - drill a hole in the bottom of the boat that will squirt water all over the engine and just hoy a couple of extra bilge pumps in

Hi Keith , The shaft on the new pump looked different, think it had another bearing and the seals sat in a different location on the shaft. At £460, i would'nt like to chance it, I'll let Storrar sort it out, afterall they're getting well paid for it.

Hi Mark, I've made a note, "Dont go out fishing with Mark in Pansy"

Yeah, Norman it'll get sorted and as long as the seas rough i'm not really that bothered, on the plus side its a learning curve, i now know about Nanni type raw water pumps.....
