  • Speed Jigs

Just bought a speed jig mould kit. With the mould you also get the wires a set of stickers and clear shrink wrap. There's no problem with making them but have read that the hook is attached to the the top rather than the bottom as with a Norwegian style pirk I use. Hoping for some sound advice from those who know and have used the speed jig.

now mate hope you are well. You can attach the hook top or bottom but with speed jigs they are best rigged with an assisst hook at the top where the eye is as the fish will invariably attach the eye end of the jig. the hook at the top will result in less hook ups on the wreck. If you think about it as the cod attack they have their mouth open and taking water in with the food it is trying to catch it is easier for them to suck in an assit hook hanging from a jig than it is the big chunk of lead. You will get more mouth hooks and less foul hooks.

    regards

Worth making your own assist hooks, they shouldn't cost more than a pound each.

Any questions give me a shout as I did the tutorial on the link.

can I ask what the difference is in the assist hook design between that of a hook tied off on mono above the hook in a similar fashion?

are there advantages in the way an assist hook as fashioned in the link (or purchased) works?

Not sure if you mean a hook to mono on a dropper immediately above the hook?

The braided assist hook tends to be less liable to tangle with the mainline or lure than a mono tied hook would.

reet well have designated the assist hooks part of the experiment as mine to investigate so will report back with my findings - quite like the "easy" one as per Jasons link...but if I was to try my hand at the ones done by Big Man where would I source the solid rings and the shrink tube?

                      any help appreciated

EDIT: Google has answered my shrink tube question...
EDIT#2: and the cord question...rings to follow

Tony, I'm sure Big Man will be intouch as he was with me. The solid rings can be obtained from Veals but they arent cheap. Big mans advice with regards to the solid rings was "If your NOT fishing Norwegian waters a split ring would do the job. He kindly sent a PM with a link but I've gone and deleted the dam thing Oops! Soory Big Man.I've seen some assist hooks on eBay and the seller is using a strong swivel instead of the solid ring. Within the Big mans link theres detailed photos with step by step instruction and links to were you obtain the bits & pieces. Just looked at the planet seafishing link if you spot the yellow high lighted words click on them and you should find supplier

Been using assist hooks (home made) for the last three years and lose a lot less gear with no notable loss in fish.Started with rings but changed to bronzed barrel swivels and they work just as well. The hardest bit is keeping the cord short enough, couple of inches is about right, so your hook knot is touching your swivel, but by the time you tighten it it's slipped an inch or two. They work great with a slice of mackerel on a pirk, looks like they would spin up but rarely do.
