I was down at the marina over the weekend to fit a small heater to the boat. B&Q’s last tubular heater is now nestled in my engine bay to keep the raw water system from freezing and keep condensation away. By Sunday, the marina had frozen over and a heavy fall of snow covered the boats and pontoons; quite picturesque.
Looking a lot different to only a month or two ago:

I find this interesting Richy, is it due to the percentage of fresh water in the Tyne being around 50-50 with the salt water or is it just that the salt water is static in the marina and causes it to freeze. I remember in the 80's fishing Riverside park at Gateshead i cast out and my sinker landed on a slab of ice floating down the river..could'nt believe it..

a lot of fresh water in the RQ, runs in from the burn in the corner, so I guess if the gates don't open for a few days it'll build up, fresh water lighter than salt water, sits on the top and freezes more readily

St Pete's hardly freezes at all, maybe the fact its tidal helps. worst I saw was a slushy layer in the middle one day last year.

It dont do the paint work any good thats for sure, last year i lost a canny bit from the waterline.

Still only 4-5 months until the fishing starts again, we are almost half way there

Aye marks spot on, its no where near as salty as the sea since it feeds a lot from the fresh water infalls, also not (in general) subject to movement up and down or movement with tide as the gates keep that back so much more fresh and still, therefore subject to more freezing.

On the same note it also stunts the growth on the bottom as its not so salty so antifoul lasts longer on a freshwater fed locked marina .. down to every 2 or 3 years now between antifouls ...

I like the sound of antifouling every 3 years, Does the anodes last longer as well Norman, I see on the pic that The Beautiful Dawn is now up the Quays...

I Lifed mine out after 21 months and the paint was so so, with 1 anode missing, 1 just a 2p size left and the other half left.

I also will only be doing it once every two years but wont push the 3rd year
