Multiplier Reel?

I'm after some advice as I am looking to purchase a new multiplier reel for when I go wrecking, I've only been out on the boat a few times, Sarah JFK (Alan Skinner - Great Skipper), Uploader and The Warlord out of Amble. I've been using two Okuma reels to date - Okuma Magda Depth Counter Multiplier and Okuma Searay which didn't cost that much but I would now like to purchase a reel for around the £80.00 mark now, I hear Penn and Abu Garcia models are worth considering? Is there any particular model you would recommend?

I've been using mono to date and again I've just purchased some Ultima 30Lb Braid. Will this do the job? I see Fishing megastore sell the Climax Superbraid for around £34.99 for 600 metres, Has anyone used this - is it worth buying?

When it comes to braid I hear mixed messages, I was just talking to a lad the other day who uses 50Lb braid whilst fishing off Whitby and then I hear people using 20 - 30Lb braid?

Hi Tricky,
I use abu garcia multipliers , the 7000 series is the best size for the boat fishing we do , they are good reels and take an aweful lot of abuse. I use 7001's because they are left hand winds , I'm right handed , just have always wound with my left and held the rod with my stronger right arm , sounds logical to me You should be able to get a brand new 7000 series for around about your budget if you shop around on the internet.
Braid has been discussed on here a few times , it's definitely the way to go , again I'm different to most in that I use power pro , I buy bulk spools of 1500 mtrs when I'm on holiday , I prefer to fish with 50lb over a wreck because it is quite expensive and getting snagged only costs me my rig rather than my rig and 40 yards of braid when using 30lb which sometimes happens.
I use 30lb power pro on an abu revo inshore baitcaster , this is on a greys baitcast rod and is great for mackerel or hard ground fishing.
I use abu's because they are readily available in left hand wind and they take whatever abuse I care to dish out to them , they get cleaned a couple of times a year and get an aweful lot of stick , but they don't let me down (so far ) Others will no doubt tell you different , but for the type of fishing you mentioned an abu 7000 if you wind with your right hand or 7001 if like me you wind with your left , filled with 50lb power pro on a 20-30lb class rod will do you perfectly.

I use a fladen maximus 666 multi with fladen braid 50 lbs bs i picked up the multi new at a car bootie for a tenner and the braid from a second had shop £6 for 250 m as said in the other post i prefer 50lbs bs as you get all your braid back with braid you can feel every bump and knock it's the way to go.
The multi has never let me down plenty of power i've had some big ling on it from depth just goes to show you don't have to spend a fortune to enjoy your fishing.

Try the penn 320gti or 33o gti load with berkley fireline or whiplash dont forget to add a decent amount of rubbing leader and you should be more than ok on the wrecks hope this helps

Cheers Norman. I have just looked at the Shimano and it does get rave reviews so I'm definately considering this one.

I personally opted for Mitchell Garcia 624 reels (or the older Captain Mitchell 624 reel). Quite old now but I got 3 good ones off Ebay for around £20 each. A total steal in my eyes and never had any problems with them at all & see nothing but good reviews on forums etc. I had tried and went through a few newer reels costing alot more before this and then tried a friends Mitchell and was hooked (for want of a better word!).

No probs mate , I'm sure you will like it , if you are putting braid on it , put a layer of mono on first , then tie the braid to that (it stops the braid slipping on the spool), then fill it up with braid , it will take a lot mind , but you are sure to lose a bit some time and after a season or two it will start to look a bit tired , take it off and reverse it so you can use the other end have fun

have to admit if I had the spare cash (or any really) I'd plump for one of these not because I know they are any good but they sure do look the business !!!
