We left Scotland for the Nort East on Monday 29th June for the fortnight ahead. It was the first time we had booked 2 full weeks, we had 2 charters booked and 2 invites from NESA members Norman and Sean to join them on their boats. Three of my Scottish friends were joining us on the first trip on JFK, we were hugely excited and expectations were high................they didn't last long!
On the journey down I spoke to Allan of JFK and he wasn't confident for the Wednesday! My friends could only make that day, but Lynn and I were flexible, however Allan was booked solid for the rest of the week. I spent most of the rest of the journey on the phone to charter boats from Sunderland to Hartlepool, only to find that most weren't sailing weekdays and the ones that were, were fully booked....................disaster!! My heart sank, our one fishing holiday of the year, planned to perfection and screwed up by the weather!!
We arrived at the caravan in somber mood, with the prospect of not getting out on a boat for at least the first 6 days. This was not in our plans!
Then a Knight in shining armour came to our rescue in the form of Stephen of Macer G who very kindly offered us places on his boat on the Friday. Buoyed up by this we enjoyed our first few days in the NE, while cursing our luck that every day bar Wednesday was flat calm!
Friday came around and we boarded Macer G and 430am and met the lads and headed for the wrecks. Lynn and I caught a few decent Cod to maybe 7lbs, Lynn had a good Ling and I had a Wolfish! We had a great day, some right good laughs with the lads, including birthday boy Keith and fish to take home.
Saturday was Slinky Kate day, but yet again the wind had it's say and the trip was put back to the Sunday. We did however keep our date with Norman and Lesley. Tony and Lisa, at the White Swan for dinner and had a great time.
We got home about 10pm and set the alarm for 215am!! All too soon the alarm woke us from our snooze and we headed to the Royal Quays.
It was a bit bumpy out on the water, but Lynn, Norman and Tony all caught fish and it was just me that could only catch the wreck. much to the amusement of the rest of the gang. Finally I came good though with decent Cod and 2 lovely Pollock.
Norman got a big Wolfish, but much to our relief didn't boat it. Lynn had a couple of tiddlers!
So our fist week had been saved by really generous private boat owners and highlights the best of NESA and the kindness of people in the North East.
Part two later.
