how far out?

Great to hear of all the cod getting caught lately,just wondering how far you have to venture out to get stuck into decent sizes,apart from 2 all of ours have been put back.

How far out are the wrecks and realistically would you go out in a 17ft bayliner?
we have radio,flares and 150N jackets but we only ever stay in sight of land probably about a mile off the piers at shields.

Also regardless of the minimum 14inch size what is an acceptable size to keep for the table?

to be honnest you dont need to be that far out you just need to find some rough ground or some kind of structure and you will pick up decent fish if you are targeting big fish then the wrecks are the way to go but you will need a GPS and an echo sounder good luck

how far out are the wrecks from tynemouth? i see the diving sites list the co-ordinates i'm also wondering if you can just use the gps off a phone or sat nav for us to give it a go sometime?

If you're targetting cod, 35cm is the minimum size you can take home but you must buy a fish measure for when you catch other species, if the fisheries check your catch you will get in bother for taking undersize fish. All the tackle shops sell them. As Deano says the rough ground is a safe choice but the wrecks are where the biggies are.

weve been putting bigger than 35cm back as by the time you take the head off they seem too small to me,so just wondering what other people regard as a minimum?

and hundreds within 5 miles - and you can still see land from 5 miles

i have a 16ft seahog and have been out 8 mile plus if you have a spare engine and the saftey equipment (radio,flares,mobile phone,life jackets etc) then it shoudnt be a problem but i suppose its up to yorself how far you dare go one thing i would recomend is if you ae going far out you check a few weather sites and make sure its going to be light winds because ou dont want to get caught out in rough seas

is that the oslo fjord?was talking some divers who showed us where its at but reckoned its a flat steel bed and no fish down there?


going to have too venture a bit further out i think,whats the best way too locate the wrecks?
also is the rough ground off whitley bay area?

Hey Chris76, firstly welcome to the forum.

I have a 18ft Pilot and go upto about 10-12miles out. If you let me know roughly where your launching from I can point you to a few wrecks but as other people have said you can catch big fish within a mile or two. Take the Pandora for example, its a 4500+tonne wreck that sank (1939 I believe) just 1.5miles off the Blyth beach. Here is a dive report link

So it shows you dont need to go far out to get a big wreck.

the oslo is just off the beach at south shields was 18000 tons in its day, and theres another wreck parked on top of it - the eugena chandris (it ran into the wreck of the oslo!)

both are pretty much flattened, just lots of steel plating and the occasional shell and and a few million .303 rifle rounds!

the rough ground at whitley bay is easy to find - there's a big yellow can half a mile off the lighthouse, and usually loads of other boats drifting about there

problem with the boat is,i go out with an old bloke and hes nervous of the hull design as its a sports boat so we dont know how it would fare further out at sea.

I have a 17.5ft shetland sheltie and i go well out

when at weymouth i am sometimes nearer the channel islands than the uk he he

My boat has a displacement hull so alot more stable in the water than a sports hull. Mark spoke about a wreck all OSLO here is a little map on where it is and might help ya and its not too far out for your mate.
