  • Wind v Swell?

Ok so Kayos is refusing point blank to check weather forecasts for our holiday(probably wisely, as it is all guesswork I imagine), but that just made me take over his mantle of crazy obsessional person and check for myself! In my defence we have had some awful luck weather wise in the past, so I am concerned.

Now we are down for 2 full weeks, so we can go out any day, but Mark's three friends are coming for the JFK2 trip and it is a long way to come, a night's B&B plus a 350 odd mile round trip, so I don't want them to come down for nothing.

I looked on magicseaweed and don't understand how some days have a strongish wind, but not much swell, yet some days have light winds and big swells. How does that work? Also is there a wind strength or swell size where charters don't go?

I asked Mark, but he has no idea, so any thoughts people?

It all depends on wind direction, a light northerly wind will lift the sea where as a gale force, west wind will flatten it.

my wee 10 pence worth lynn.

big swells can come from a land far away, not always caused by local wind.

in the case of your pals from scotland, make sure alan knows the situation, and put your trust in him to make the right decision, i dont think he will let you down

        Hi Lynn,
Looking at magic seaweed Atlantic charts and select "pressure" it currently goes out as far as next tues (30th June) and shows a big low area but not deep dominating slightly North, kinda Scotland . This means for Newcastle area it will pull winds around it in an anti-clockwise direction but not too fast as the lines, isobars are wide spread. This will result in south west winds from Monday (ish) so should flatten the sea, not that it will need flattening as the end of this week will be westerly anyway.
It should be fine other than maybe a bit wet now and again and not a scorcher week.
But of course it can change

Fingers crossed for yous both and for the whole of your holiday.........

        Norm
