I got a phone call from a mate of mine the other day,
He chucked in boat fishing a few years back, he was hunting around
the garage and came across a few bits & bobs from his boat fishing days,
he hoyed them in a polly bag rang me and asked if I wanted them.. Not one to
turn down some free gear I had a walk along to his house and picked up the bag,
Had a quick look in, Brilliant there was a few 9oz weights, some spinners , swivels
a few pkts of daylights ,,,, stuff like that, walking home on a lovely sunny day
I decided to have a quick pint or two (as you do) and have a proper rummage through the bag,,, I got to the bottom of it and came across a green plastic box about the size of a
tv remote control ,,,, took it out of the bag put it on the bar and had a quick look,
It was a miniflare box with what I can only describe as 8 party popper type things in,,
wondering how it worked I googled it, Its a signal kit pyrotechnic pistol No 1 mk 3 ,,,,
after reading up on it for about 5 minuets, the information also included a little bit of
Legal advice----- I need a class 1 fire arms Certificate to handle and use the said Item, After a little brown trouser moment I took it off the bar and put it back into the bag, the pub I was in is only 40 yards away from Whitley Bay police station,,, Its now locked up in the shed
I didn't know they were classed as a firearm, something to do with the projector, its
classed as a barrel ,,,,, I wont be flashing that around in public again,,,

in the same situation,got a couple myself.think ill bin them.unless somebody wants them,for 1p.ps,not ALLOWED to say FOC.lol.

This is also my thought, they are there to be used in an emergencey ,
the kit I have does not look like a gun,its just a thin tube that looks like a thick
pen, you screw the "party popper" bit onto the end then pull down a spring that has
a firing pin on the end let go and bingo,,,
I plan to take it out with me when Im on the boat, I also take a hand held vhf marine transceiver that I dont have a license for, but if one of these things saves my life or someone else ,,, Iwould very much doubt that I would be prosecuted for it ( ???? )
I can hardly see the Police setting up a sting operation searching every boat for illegally held vhf radios and flare packs,

Some of the old flare that fired out of a “Very Pistol” needed a fire arms licence for and are like hen’s teeth to get replacements for.

The one that you took to the pub sounds more like the little personal flare kits that are less restricted. Whatever you do don’t just bin it, they need to be handed in to the coastguards or perhaps with your story the local police may take them off your hands.
If you’re planning on keeping them then check their expiration date and condition. You could end up in a worse state after you fire on than before if they are past their best.

To be honest Kev and MR C Im going to hang on to them, they are one more
safety feature on the boat, along with the vhf and a mobile phone,,
for me you can not have enough stuff like that, We only have a small boat,
12ft, with a 4hp on the back of it, me and the lads ( only enough room for 3 of us )
fish off W/Bay about a mile N.E off ST Marys lighthouse, and drift with the tide down to the Briar Dene, then back to the Lighthouse 2 /3 times depending on how strong the tide is & the wind direction, I have only had one bad experience in about 10 years,, The weather changed so quickly , the wind came up and turned from West to S.w and the tide turned and was blowing out to sea , for about 20/30 minuets we were treading water, just holding our position, and trying to get back to the Boat house on W/Bay beach, thankfully the wind dropped and we got back,, I think if it had gone on for another 15/20 mins it would have been a call to the RLNI, but we would have had to guide them to us, cos were only a little boat, and I doubt they would have seen us until they were virtually on top of us , so a flare would have been a good idea if we'd had one, we have now got one and I'm hanging on to it, if i did dispose of it I'd probably just take the cartridges out of the box and chuck them over-board,,,, It would save a lot of hassle, ie taking them to the Police or to the Coastguard , ,,,, but thanks for the advice, I cant see a use by date , that is a little worrying , I just hope We never have to use them, , Cheers,,,,,
