  • Shads / SP's weighted / unweighted

Just a daft question. I'm looking at using shads and SP's next time on a charter boat. The plan was to tie my mainline to a 3-way swivel, a weaker short piece of mono to a 10-12oz sinker. Then a 6ft trace to my lure of choice. Question is, do these also need weighting with a jig-head, or will a plain hook suffice?

Hi, I prefer weighted as they seem to "swim" better but do use un weighted on smaller scale plastics like grubs. Would normally use two snoods and plastics in this case with short snoods of about 12 to 18 inches.
But best are weighted shads/plastics as unweighted will flair behind the sinker on the way down and wrap around the line, especially if a long 6 ft snood, whereas a weighted shad will tend to drop with or alongside the weight.
I would suggest cutting the trace length back to 3 foot max to help prevent tangles.

    Cheers
