    Hi any one know or come acroos this problem before? been out today and the outboard is only running at half power, the engine ticks over fine and starts as normall but when try and use full throttle there is hardly any response, its the first time its been out for months, so thought that a good run out would clear it but still the same when coming home, sounds like a similar problem to the post iva cod on has posted, but this ismy main engine a 60hp mariner.


    ANY ADVICE WOULD BE REALLY APPRECIATED.

    if there is an oil pressure prob or a cooling prob some engines will only run at a reduced speed.is it possible the engine water intakes are obstructed in some way

      how would i know mate any tell tale signs, outboards are not my thing dont have much of a clue about them.

        d!!ont know much myself check to see there is plenty water coming out from the engine when you motoring, oil pressure you would need to get checked im sure you will get much better advice on here shortly

          Start very simlpe, over heating caused by no water circulating around the power head.
          1. Fuel is the correct mix
          2. Fuel lines are clear.
          3. Check throttle mechanism is working properly and opening the carbs.
          4. Check all spark plugs are sparking. Often 1 is duff.
          5. Check plugs are tight in cylinder head.

          Now things get a bit tricky,

          Carbs are worn or not opening properly, you need to take the air box off and look to see if they are working.

          Then its checking jets to see if any are blocked.

          The first five items are simple checks, and 8 times out of ten its one of these.

          remember that a engine needs fuel, compression and a spark at the right time to work properly.

          Where is the boat and engine kept. If its Sunderland I will have look next time I am down the Marina.

            Paul, If your engine has stood all winter with petrol in the carb/s, it could be the petrol has emulsified into a jelly, causing blockages to jets etc, might just need carbs cleaned or blown through with compressed air. Foot pump or bicycle pump should do the trick. Arthur

              2 stroke or 4 stroke?

              what year is it?

              could be running safe mode. is there plenty water coming out of the tell tale? how hot is it?

              there's a known issue in mariners, there's a small grommet in the head the connects the water outflow tot he tell tale, they can clog up if they been laid up a while.

              lift the hood, pull the tell tale hose off, see if it clear, see if the outlet is clear, bit of wire poked in can help clear them

              also try crack the brass nuts on the bottom of the carb bowls and pump the primer bulb a few times to flush clean petrol through the carbs, while doing that have a look at the inline fuel filter, if you se lots of air bubbles appearing in there as you squeeze the bulb it might be sucking air in, so check for perished fuel lines, loose fittings etc

                Thanks for the advice everyone, hopefully its just something simple, i will try all the suggestions mentioned, i think it is running in safe mode somehow, probaly is getting air into it somewere, but i am not sure were from,its really annoying when youre used to running at 20knots on a flat calm sea like today and the best you get is 9knots

                  The date and stroke (4 or 2) of the engine will tell everyone who is trying to help you a lot more

                  If it is the one with the grommit problem then people have spent weeks trying to fix the problem doing this and that so the date and stroke will help lots
