Good First Boat?

Hi all,

I'm thinking of getting a small fishing boat at some point this year. Nothing special just something for me to have a run out in with or without mates.

I've been looking around for a while and I do likes the look of a Quicksilver 500.. good boat bad boat?

I'm also looking for boat dealers in the NE, because I'm far from the expert I would like to think that if I buy from a dealer if I do come across problems I should have a place to fall back on.

Apart from the Power Boat level 2, radio course and of course all the safty equipment should I be looking out for anything else?

I was thinking of trying to get out on a boat with someone to gather some knowledge / experiance.. just a boat of similar size not a charter boat, would this be a good idea as well?

Hi , I'm no expert on boats , but I know exactly where you are coming from as I've been through the experience in the last couple of years .
What boat to get depends on things like where you are going to keep it , what you want to do with it and not least how much you can afford to spend on it.
If you can , you should get out on a Quicksilver 500 , and any other similar sized boats to see for yourself what they are like , not many owners will say they own a bad boat.
PA lynch have a try a boat day at Sunderland Marina in a couple of weeks time , they will have orkney boats there for people to try , have a look there for a start.
If you want a Quicksilver , your nearest dealer is in Middlesbrough.
A Quicksilver 500 will cost you around £10-18k depending on whether you buy new or used , there are an aweful lot of boats available in that price range , don't rush into buying one because it looks nice.

Hi jpster, If you are interested in a qs 500 there is one for sale in the marina at sunderland but it might be a bit expensive for a first boat. Where abouts are you.....I've got a boat in the marina if you want a look round....

The boat would be used as often as possible and probably kept at Sunderland / Hartlepool / Seaham (when finished) all year round, I would be going out on my own or with friends most of the time.

The boat would probably be moored up all year round just because the missus said she does not want a boat in the drive way

One of the reasons I looked at the QS500 Pilothouse is because of a locakable cuddy, just means I can leave rods, finders etc etc on the boat without thinking it was going to get nicked...

I'm moving to Sherburn Hill in about 2 weeks so most places are within easy driving distance and thanks for the offer Jester, that would be great if I could at some point.. along with picking your brains about other boats and general information.

Arvor 18 does look like a nice boat.. more than I would spend for my first boat (second hand going for 14.5k)... maybe a ok price for a second

JP - Bought my first boat 12 months ago. Was very tempted by the quicksilver but by the time I'd added the cost of lifejackets, anchors, plotters, aux engine etc it was too pricey. Bought a Predator 165 instead. Does everything I want from a fast fisher PM me if you want anymore details.

if it was me i would buy a reiver sportsman for a number of reasons the first being you can go and watch him build your boat from scratch to your spec and if you ever wanted to move onto a bigger boat the reivers hold there price so you wouldnt loss that much on it also they are amazing in the water and cut through like a hot knife through butter
