  • Targetting halibut this year BFM are on board.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have 2 days booked this summer to have a go purposely to target halibut dave barmham the editor from boat fishing monthly is onboard with his pall jim and glenn stocks who is out main sponsor of the WCSA festivals we have some very intersting methods to try includeing live baiting i know halibut swim at different dephts so its going to be one hell of challenge i reallly looking forward to this one as last year throughout june i wouldnt say they were in mass numbers but it was averageing aleast 2 week caught here at whitby upto 50lb in weight so if we sucessfull it turn into something reallly special there seems to a certain time of year when these fish are caught before all the big shoals of feed turn up it would also be very good for my sponsors so fingers crossed cant wait the lads from BFM wanted try last year in late august not the best time as the herring were here in mass so this time fingers crossed we are hopeing for far better results.

This one i took a picture of when th fish was landed it was caught on the 3 mile it was 30lb

Worth a try but never really hear of them being caught just 1 or 2 a year, you spoke with the netters in the area for feedback on numbers, areas etc?

Like most species they there and if you put the time in you will get one.

Northeast there was at least 10 or a 12 caught last june here at whitby the best went 50lb plus there was 2 weighed in our big summer festival i also know of lads getting snapped with fish that just took off at speed and smashed them typical halibut reaction when hooked i have had 2 myself over the years and that is just what they do take off like rocket when hooked there have allready been halibut showing the gillnetters have had but only in 60-80ft in depth the halibut caught here last summer were caught around 180ft mark.

Baymans Hole is the place to be. long way off, but could be worthwhile. Was on my mates commercial boat just before christmas fixing his 'lectronics, he'd just come in and had quite a few taken from there, reckons thats where most of the ones that are landed in shields are caught

some big cod out there as well
ʎɐqǝ uo pɹɐoqʎǝʞ ɐ ʎnq ı ǝɯıʇ ʇsɐן ǝɥʇ sı sıɥʇ.

        Thought for the day:
Some people are like slinkies - not really good for anything but bring a smile to your face when thrown down the stairs

Converting an MFV Fifie trawler type thing.

Mark one of trawlers here goes to what they call dab hole and i have seen him land anywhere upto 50 halibuts at time when the fishing is good that spot is around the 50 mile mark but hopefully mate i wont have to steam that far they were here in june last summer in numbers and most were caught inseide of 5 mile the gillnetters here are now starting to catch them at only a mile off so they are moveing in its like bass untill now they havent been really targetted but lads fishing of the kayaks have had a whale of a time with the bass its just useing the right methods to target them.

Paul, I remember talking to the lad in the picture after I saw the halibut as he put it in his car. I couldn't believe the sea conditions he caught it in. It was blowing hard that day with the water a mucky brown colour.

How the fish found his bait/lure god only knows but it made me think the fish must have been emboldened by the conditions. They are out and out hunters of course and are known as 'flounders on steroids' in some parts of the world.

In Canada the really big ones can knock hell out of a fishing boat once aboard and I have heard of them being shot at the surface with a shotgun (like you do). I don't think they like hard lures though.

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

                Alan

I remember that day very well the water was very coloured on the 3 mile it was caught on lights ground to the south of whitby i was amaized where he said they had caught it due to the clarity but you never know alan things shock you and that was one of them i hope we do get one big enough that we have to shoot it now that would be something else but seriously it will be nice if we get 1 or 2 that would be great.

give a man a fish and feed him for a day - teach the man to fish and feed him for life!!!!

Hope it works out Paul, we used to get them up here in Caithness but since the haddie shoals were scooped up they are thin on the ground. Still the odd one about every couple of years.

Having said that not many folk target then specifically.
