I am pleased I am a deck/nav officer rather than an engineer! I am currently just off Singapore on a new build ship on sea trials. Yesterday we were running things up when the engineers heard one of the engines making some strange noises. They rushed to the control room to shut it down but it was too late! Luckily no-one was hurt. I had heard cat engines go with a bang when they do go and it was proved right yesterday! Outboards all the way for me!






It blew out both sides and you can see the impact on the bulkhead on one of the photo's!
I can't wait to get home for the looming new season! The 34 degree sunshine is ok though!

over rated, over priced, fuel guzzling, oil burning, leaky, smelly unreliable piles of ****e IMHO

mate of mine had a full overhaul of his last septemeber - £8,500

2 months/300 hours later

valve collar breaks, dropped a valve, broke a piston and threw a rod - £17,000 repair

The scary thing is Mark we have 10 cat engines on-board! They are all under quarantine at the minute to make sure the same doesn't happen again! The plus point is that we are heading into port on monday and I might get back home . Growler's engine is being serviced this weekend so after a hull polish I might be off Creswell next weekend! I can't wait. I think it was march me and Micky started last year with fish from the off!
