GPS JAMMING TRIAL OFF TYNEMOUTH
---------------------------------------------------------

Date : On 30th November for a period of 5 days.

GPS jamming trials will be conducted utilising a jammer that will be onboard a vessel sailing within an area about 7 nautical miles east of Tynemouth with corners at the following positions:-

55º 09'.00N
001º 08'.52W

55º 00'.00N
001º 00'.48W

54º 58'.02N
001º 10'.02W

55º 01'.02N
001º 13'.02W

55º 07'.98N
001º 13'.02W

The trials will be carried out between 1000Z and 1600Z with up to two 1 hour jamming slots each day with at least 2 hours between slots.

GPS signals and consequently the DGPS service may be unreliable during this period, within and up to a range of 1 nautical mile from the area defined above.

No further notice will be given.

why would these trials be carried out in the first place - what would be the reason of this exercise

aahhh well, no there's a question...

I guess there's obvious military reasons, but betcha somewhere down the line in the not too distant future, it'll involve hanging a price tag on using gps somehow, and there'll a system in place to block usage if you ain't coughed up

or maybe it's linked with the new European GPS system (which as mark points out will probably be by licence) as a check that the American signal can be stopped (or jammed) forcing use of the new one .........

Whatever the reason, there will be a cost involved .

very possibly hit the nail on the head norman, egnos (the european version of gps) went live on the 1st of october.

tis a curious thing to do. they already know it can be jammed, and they can also tweak it so everyones is woefully innacurate unless you know the right differential to counter balance the tweak

wonder if they are using the old cullercoats radio decca chain as the transmitter for the jamminess

me thinks I might have to see what I can find out, might make an interesting artcle, does sound like as Norman says, you want to use it you pay for it. Have heard this rumoured a good while back.

I thought it would be a good idea back in the day, when yuppies and other gob****es were strutting their stuff on tube trains yelling down brick size mobiles, to sit opposite a mate and get out 2 tin cans connected with string and start talking about how we'd got on down the dole.

Similar thing hit me recently just after the skipper flogged his sextant on e-bay and we were driving to mad palce 900 miles away . Drive round a busy city hanging out the window staring through a sextant - desperately hoping someone would say "What you up to rasta?" "Satnav innit", although it's not really satnav but hopefully yous get me jist.

hang on, isnt it true about all forms of navigation, in the old days you couldn't navigate on a cloudy night because you couldn't see the stars, and the US military could turn the lot off if they wanted to, then where would you be if you couldn't find the wrecks by shore marks, and jamming navigational/radar aids has been around for a long time. Remember going across the top of Luce Bay once, everything went dead, lost all power in battery, GPS, radio went dead, good job I had a spare battery. Was told it was the guys from the Ministry who test god knows what in Luce Bay.

What? The military now have stuff that makes a fuse blow

Seems like someone making a case for having every ship fitted with Eloran. I dont think the problems that people cant find their wrecks properly, more to the point is if you are navigating a crude oil carrier into Milford Haven and some smart arsed Tallywhatsit works out how to jam your GPS you suddenly find you are a mile or two from where you thought you are.

We'll soon be getting notice's on car parks saying no commercial vehichles or oil tankers.
