  • Boat questions!

I'm looking to find a way of getting a better position for my transducer, the lowest point I have is to close to the engine & is in water too turbulent

Also wanting some advice on how to alter my transom as it is very low & I want to get a long shaft engine to replace the short I allready have

Tony have you got any photos,
    what transducer is it
what is up with the current position ? what is happening on the screen
the transducer doesn't have to go on the lowest point.
post some photos it will help

Screen goes wild if travelling more than a few knots, & doesn't show correct depth unless your almost stationary
I went back to where I bought it
& they tested the transducer & returned it after a few days saying it was spot on
They've said it needs to sit further in the water
So I thought of making some kind of adjustable bar so I could move it up & down to suit

you need to post more info, make, model etc and some pics. You normally need to mount the transducer out of the turbulence so you may have to look at that when you are moving. but it depends which one you have.

Assuming it's a transom mounted transducer I suppose the position is governed by the shape of your hull.

              Sorry for lack of info...
Yes it's a transom mounted transducer & was advised the position I have it in to be the best position for my boat
It's a Garmin transducer connected to echomap 50s unit
& works no problem at low speeds

Looks to be in about the same position as the one on Shady.

From the photo is looks like the transducer might not be quite horizontal.

Does the sounder not have cruising / fishing modes?

Is it possible it's picking up interference from something else?
                Cheers, Keith.

Got nothing else on boat at the miniute
Havnt even mounted the compass yet
To be honest Iv never checked or looked at cruising speeds on the sounder,
I think it's near to horizontal the photo I've taken doesn't give it justice!
I've tried it in a few positions eg in same place but higher & lower. & it seems to nearly work in the lower position & can't get it any lower, & that's my idea of making some sort of bracket to lower it into water

I'm no expert but I don't think you'd want the bottom surface of the transducer any lower than flush with the bottom of the hull.
                    Cheers, Keith.

Didn't think it made a difference
Might just be a case of trial & error & tilting the transducer so it's parallel to the water surface

this is where my transducer is fitted for my old f/f and it worked ok bot wouldn't read above 7mph. I think its the one on the right , the other is the speed sensor .It needs to be parallel to the sea bed. yours looks fine , it is probably just getting the angle right.

Definately worth trying the angle first

hi tony fit it inside the hull on a good bed of silicon squidge it around in the silicone to get rid of any air bubbles transducer will shoot through hull no bother have done this on two differant boats hope this helps.

I was thinking of doing that but boat has a floating floor. So would have to mount it at the front of boat
Unless I cut a hatch in the deck
I thought it was a different type of transducer for through hull
